“The university’s health insurance covers what it can. I’ve been employed with them for long enough to have benefits,” Viktor starts, mulling over his thoughts for a moment. An odd flush of colour begins to bloom on his cheeks, spreading down to his neck and throat. Jayce watches him swallow. “But there is the issue of my status.”
At that, Jayce frowns. “Your status?”
Viktor’s jaw tightens. “Everything I and the, the child, needs will be covered if…” He curses something low and sharp under his breath. He wets his lips. Eventually, those familiar amber eyes lock with Jayce’s. “If I had, eh, support from the child’s sire.”

Summary
Viktor’s scowl deepens. “That is not what I meant, and you know it,” he says suddenly. The rush of English out of his mouth takes a second for Jayce to register. Whoever it is on the other end of the line evidently has to take a moment too. Viktor presses on. “Well, they can do whatever it is they want. My place is here.”
Jayce’s chest tightens. He debates about slipping back to their room. He doesn’t need to hear the other voice on the phone to know who Viktor might be speaking to.
In the few phone calls he’s managed to have with his family, they have been either curt and short, or long and pointed. Regardless of what kind of phone call he might have, Viktor always comes out of it with a shadow cast across his face.

“She, uh,” Viktor tries, “She said that she’s been having some trouble with noisy neighbours for the last few weeks.”
Jayce’s brow lifts. “Oh? I haven’t heard anything.”
“Well, that’s the problem, baby,” he says after a moment, giving Jayce a pointed look. “Because I believe she is referring to us. We can, uh, be quite loud, no?”
It takes him longer than he would like to admit to realise what Viktor isn’t saying. There is a marked silence between the two of them where he swears the other man can hear the cogs turning and shifting in Jayce’s head. “Oh.” And when the cogs eventually snap together, and he realises Viktor’s meaning, Jayce gapes. “OH."

Summary
As a general rule, Jayce never checks his phone when he’s on the campus, especially when he’s teaching. Today was the exception.
The man hardly has time to say hello before Jayce huffs. “What exactly are you trying to do to me?” he grits, reaching out to set a hand onto the metal railing of the staircase. His knuckles turn near-white.
Viktor — the bastard — only lets out a low, rumbling chuckle. “You’re going to be late for your next class, baby,” he says simply, with that familiar lilt to his voice that Jayce wants to both hear more of and smother entirely.

Summary
It started with Jayce being unable to kill Salo at the Hexgates. His hammer was poised to strike, flexed, tensed muscles in a damning position, but a thought sparked within him, ‘what if Viktor can feel this?’ and he was powerless to stop it.
Instead, he followed Salo through the Undercity, gritting his teeth all the while as Salo marvelled about Viktor’s splendour, basked in his glory, ran his fucking mouth about Jayce’s partner’s beauty. Ex-partner. Fuck.
(Or, Salo has to watch.)
