Two days later, Eddie arrived at the 118 again, and opened his locker door to find a surprise. There, the photo of Chris just where he had left it, and underneath — a post-it note. In large, untidy scrawl was a short phrase: “Super adorable. I love kids!” Eddie stared at it briefly, a little in shock. He hadn’t even remembered that he had forgotten the photo; and here was a bright and unsigned missive like a wave from a friend. He smiled bemusedly down into his locker, unsure what to make of it.

“Nope, not part of the question,” he smiled at Lucy, easy as anything. Buck tried to count quickly in his head, the math not adding up.

The thing was, the 118 was full of gossips.
Eddie had been at the station less than a week before Hen and Chim wrangled details about his “hot young thing” from him (“Buck is only 4 years younger than me, he is not a ‘hot young thing’!” Eddie complained.)
And Bobby was open about his worries for his son’s lack of direction and the secrets he appears to be keeping (“I just wish I could help Evan find the thing that gives him purpose,” Bobby lamented.)
It just made it all the more ridiculous (and horrifying) when Eddie realizes he’s been dating his Captain’s son this whole time (“Defiling his baby,” Chimney cackled, because he clearly wanted Eddie murdered.)

Buck’s face became redder as he began to read the tweets. The most liked tweet coming from someone named Guillermo Díaz, Buck had no idea who that was, but the guy had those blue check marks by his name and over 800,000 likes. ‘Jesus.’ Buck vaguely knew who Lin-Manuel Miranda was, he tweeted out a video of Buck and Eddie hugging.
He scrolled lower and swore loudly. “The Rock and Smash Mouth tweeted about us.” Buck bit the inside of his cheek hard, “Great.” He groaned sarcastically. Buck opens his door on the Saturday morning before Father’s Day, fully prepared for the long trek down to the mailroom, but he’s stopped in his tracks by something on the floor. He frowns down at the ground, because there’s a small, potted cactus right in front of his door, and he’s about 95% sure he didn’t leave it there. He groans as he bends down to pick it up, carefully balancing on his crutches while his fingers fumble with the small envelope attached to the cactus.
Chris says thanks for the help and Happy Father’s Day. He wanted to get this for you because it’s small like him but won’t die since you’re a little slow right now. – Eddie
Buck blinks back the sudden onslaught of tears that prickle in his eyes, the words swarming his vision before he takes the cactus into the living room and sets it on the middle of the coffee table. His heart flips in his chest once, twice, and by the third flip, he knows for sure what it means.
