Summary
Buck knows what this is.
The feelings swirling in his gut. How it felt like agony every time he drew in a breath.
It happens slowly, slow enough that even Bobby doesn’t comment until he’s slipped further under the waves.
“What, no steak for you Buck? This is a quality triple A cut.”
It’s a perfect medium-rare, faintly oozing blood.
It makes him want to vomit.
After the shooting, Buck finds he can’t stand the sight of raw flesh, the metallic smell distinct on his tongue—can taste it in his mouth, cloying at the back of his throat.
Everything comes to a head at a BBQ hosted at the Grant-Nash’s.

Maddie chuckled, pouring herself a generous amount, taking a seat next to him on the couch. “So… Do we need to talk about what happened earlier?” She raised her eyebrows at him, sipping from her glass.
Buck furrowed his brow, pouring his own drink and placing the bottle on the coffee table in front of him. “Talk about what?”
“Your comment about Eddie? When I was talking about Chimney?” She smirked at him.
Buck swallowed, his mouth suddenly dry. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. That was nothing.” -

Summary
Eddie was less than thrilled when Chris came home with a red solo cup full of dirt. He was so happy to tell Eddie about the class speaker they had, a botanist—“plant guy,” he called him—who helped them plant a flower. Eddie was used to Chris dumping all of his latest endeavors on him, and it would certainly disappoint the kid when his plant died because Eddie couldn’t care for it.
But Chris took care of it. He took care of Queen and loved her, but of course, she started to wilt. So, what else could Eddie do but pack up his son and the plant, drive over to the botanist that came to speak to their class, and find out what was wrong with the plant? And maybe drool over the guy, just a little bit? No harm, right?

Summary
“Buck!” He looks up. His tears are blurring his sight, but he recognizes the figure standing in his doorway.
“No,” Buck says to him. He shakes his head. “No.”
“Buck,” Bobby’s voice is soft.
“No!” Buck’s voice raises. “He’s not dead!”
Bobby walks closer. In that stupid funeral firefighter suit people wear when telling family members about their fallen heroes, not unlike the military.
“He’s not dead!” Buck screams. “Go away, he’s not dead! He’s not dead!” Bobby reaches out to him, and Buck fights against his hold, pushing the older man away. “No! Don’t touch me! He’s not dead! He can’t be dead! Eddie is not dead!”
--Buck's life changes when he loses Eddie on a call and his body is never found. A funeral and a career switch later, Buck has to figure out how to live without the love of his life. He has to stay strong though because he needs to take care of Christopher.

Summary
“Hello.”
"Hello, this is Principal Franklin and I'm calling from The Durand School. May I please speak with Mr. Evan Buckley-Diaz?"
Eddie's looking at Buck with furrowed eyebrows waiting for Buck to explain why Chris' school is calling and Buck's looking at him like he doesn't know what's going on either.
"This is Evan Buckley-Diaz, is everything ok?"
Everyone in the loft stops what they are doing and because they're all nosey, all of them focus their attention on Buck so that they can hear what's going on.
Buck can hear Chris' voice in the background of the call loudly saying, "Buck, don't tell dad!" Luckily his phone isn't on speaker so Eddie wasn't able to hear what Chris said.

Summary
"No!" Eddie screams, sounding like the word was ripped from his throat, like he's the one who just got shot. There's a beat or two before Buck understands why.
On his side, a patch of dark red is slowly spreading across the dark blue of his uniform. He's looking down at it for a few seconds, like he doesn't understand what it is. And then the pain hits Buck, white hot and icy cold all at once, and his eyes roll into the back of his head as he crumples to the ground.

Summary
Eddie was busy searching for where he’d set the pans. He didn’t think they had been unpacked yet and there were a number of boxes still sitting on the kitchen counter. There was still a lot to do before the new house in LA felt like home. Christopher was setting up his stuffed animal army in his new room and that left Eddie to figure out something for dinner.
It was a new city and a new start.
Then someone unlocked the front door with a key they shouldn’t have and a voice called out, “Honey, I’m back!”
