If the walls of their apartment could talk, they’d speak of quiet nights in, Steve dozing in Bucky’s lap while Bucky read after dinner. They’d remember the muffled sounds of Steve’s Ma’s old record player in the background, playing Armstrong and Sinatra. They’d tell how Bucky would carry him to bed and how Steve clung to him in his sleep. If the walls could talk, they’d speak of love.

Faith is a fickle thing, but Steve finds himself comforted by the idea that maybe the afterlife is real, Heaven or something close to it, and maybe when he dies — actually and fully dies, that is — he’ll get to see his Ma again. He’ll get to see her smile for longer than he can make the image linger in his brain, he’ll get to greet her with a kiss on the cheek and get one from her, too.
And the flowers. He’ll get to give her those flowers.

Then Sam says his name, a gentle “Buck?” and it’s hushed, kind, and it blows out the flame in Bucky’s spine, calming him, because he is safe, and he’s loved, but there’s still hurt curling in his gut when he lets himself fall into Sam’s arms – because while he’s incredibly grateful for Sam, for one beautiful moment he thought Steve was there.

The weariness covering Steve’s face makes him look a little more his age; but the warmth that fills his chest and the soft, tired smile he manages as he removes the suit, all the while looking at Bucky, has him feeling like a scrawny smitten kid in Brooklyn for the first time in decades.
He practically body slams Bucky when he crosses the distance between them in only a few quick strides and wraps him in a hug, melting into his warmth just as Bucky does his and closing his eyes.
For the first time in a long time, Steve is at peace.

He doesn’t find any; just a warm expression of understanding.
