Summary
When Bobby is forced to take emergency leave, the last person anyone expects to step up as interim captain of the 118 is Evan Buckley.
The last person Buck expects is himself. But with a badge, a clipboard, and just enough authority to be dangerous, Buck decides to do what he does best: take care of his people… even if it means bending a few rules, re-writing a few others, and accidentally becoming the most chaotic captain the 118 has ever seen.
Eddie thinks this is a terrible idea.
Eddie is also deeply, helplessly in love with him.

Summary
"Maybe we’re just approaching this the wrong way? Maybe we just need a… a different way of communicating with him, if he’s up for it. Like… get to his playing field. Meet him where he’s comfortable, you know? That way he’d feel more comfortable talking to you."
Eddie lifts his head from his hands, only to glare at Buck skeptically. “Like to the zoo or something? How am I supposed to take him there if he’s in Texas ? I don’t think he would appreciate it if I just showed up to take him to the damn zoo, Buck.”
“No, I’m not talking about taking him to the zoo,” he says. It’s been a year or two since frequent zoo trips, anyways, and he knows Eddie knows that. “I was thinking more like,” he gestures in the direction of the TV, where a couple gaming consoles sit in the TV stand. “Like one of those online games he plays with his friends. He’s really into Fortnite right now.”
or, buck thinks eddie and chris should play fortnite to try to fix their relationship. also, eddie deals some good ol’ catholic guilt and repression

Summary
Eddie didn’t text back in the 20 seconds Buck spent staring at his phone, which was no surprise. There wasn’t any response while he drove to the station, either, but that made perfect sense. Eddie was working today, and he was probably rushing to get there just like Buck was.
Buck wasn’t in the mood to stare at his phone all day, jumping out of his skin at every notification, so he removed the temptation and, in a spurt of newfound maturity, left his phone in his locker for the duration of his shift.
But there was no text when he checked around lunchtime, or when they got a lull after dinner. Or in the morning when his shift was over.
All of that he could easily rationalize away, but after four tortuous days, Buck accepted the fact that he’d been ghosted.
