It's easy, Wemmbu thinks, to forget about this misery when there's someone else with him. The room is only illuminated by a lapping flame from a lantern he had the forethought to craft before coming back, leaving the room drenched in shadow and Jaden's expression ever the more difficult to see. He looks softer without his mask, all smug and pleased with his undivided attention on Wemmbu in a way that makes him squirm.
or: Wemmbu really, really does not love how empty his new home is. Jaden is there to fill it.

“Let’s make Parrot the student council president.” Spoke slammed a Red Bull on the table like it was the gavel in the final verdict of a court case.
“Spoke, what the ever-loving fuck are you yapping about now?” Wemmbu didn’t bother looking up from the YouTube video blaring away on his laptop. Annoying prick refused to wear earbuds, even in the library.

“You’re worried about my reputation?” The farmer asked, tilting his shoulder forward a little as he directed his energy to Alex more head-on.
“You can take it or leave it if you don’t like my advice. I just feel bad for you when you’re at all those holidays, standing on the fringes because nobody wants to dance with you.”
“I am learning a lot about how you feel about me.” The farmer suggested. For some reason, this brought all the heat to Alex’s face in a rush.
“Oh, fat chance.” He snorted. “You couldn’t handle how I feel about you, yankee.” Shit. Why did he say that?

It's the farmer's first winter in Pelican Town, and Alex had grown accustomed to the near-daily small talk they had shared in the milder months. Since the turn of the season, though, the farmer's been especially busy, leaving Alex alone with his thoughts about why that would bother him so much.
