Caravans were always a gamble. They both knew that. In some cases chefs were highly sought after, especially good ones. Needed for strong men and acrobats. In others, the want for good food often was scoffed at. They wanted something quick and fast. Hard bread and tough meat was enough to satisfy most of the members. What they really needed was hard laborers and cleaners.

Summary
The thing is, Jonathan Sims is someone you’d call the police on if you saw him hanging around a school, those frazzled clothes and bags under his eyes, the frantic muttering and thousand-year stare.
Yet there he sits, headteacher of The Magnus Institute for Gifted Young Minds.
The name’s a bit misleading, it is. They’re in a bad part of town. The parents are either terrible or absent, and the kids—
“They’re monsters,” his new and handsome coworker grins, when Martin’s signature on his contract is barely dry. “Absolute monsters. Get too close and you’ll lose some fingers. Or maybe your mind.”
“They’re babies,” is all Martin can feebly manage, in reply, and Tim’s eyes narrow at the fondness in his voice.

Summary
If anyone asked the very unfortunate Baudelaire children if they liked their siblings, their response would either be “which one?” or “depends on the day”, depending on whether one of them had recently been pranked. The six siblings had to spend a lot of time together; while most of them had friends, they didn’t spend a lot of time outside their home, so they had to learn to get along. If they didn’t, the oldest four might’ve ripped each other apart before Solitude could even exist.
But, well, they were siblings. These kinds of things happened to several children who were forced to spend the first two decades of their lives cooped up together. They could fight, they could make up, they could forget why they were arguing and start laughing over the same joke. And, of course, most of their antics were all connected by the phrase “Don’t tell Mother and Father.”
But one day, on Briny Beach, the six Baudelaire children received distressing news that would change the course of their lives forever... not that it would affect their sibling bickering.
Six Baudelaires AU, Part One of Three. Includes The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, The Wide Window and The Miserable Mill.
