The church collapsed three nights ago, on Christmas Eve, A Very Merry Christmas and God Bless You, spraying fire and smoke and glass like sand in a ripping beach wind. That means today is the twenty-eighth of December, now that the sun is peeking through the bitter grey skies again. Renee has been here, waiting in his foxhole (or, indeed, behind every quiet corner) for almost three days.
He wonders if tearing the bandanna did it.

Summary
They don’t… talk about the occupation, much, or about the war. These are ugly memories, a broken glass packed carelessly in a moving box, where the extent of the damage remains hidden until newspaper unfurls and something slices you open. They don’t want blood in the carpet, but at some point, you have to know how every piece ended up.
So you unravel one glass after another, and let those shards fall where they may. Eventually, in the long dying days of moving into a new house, every box will be unpacked.

She doesn’t mind. She had liked Morgan City.
“You’re going to take me out on the water this weekend, right?” She asks. “I packed for it."
