    Summary

"Last night, the painting... it came to life! He spoke to me and... it was his voice. It was his voice, Jonathan."

It's 1999, and Will Byers is a successful artist in NYC, making ends meet despite the difficulties his lifestyle presents. Only problem? He's out of inspiration and running low on funds, having sold the last of his paintings at a charity auction he didn’t even want to be a part of. So his therapist suggests he paint the thing he can’t seem to let go of, and with that homework he decides to paint a portrait of the One That Got Away.

It's fine, and somewhat cathartic... until the painting starts speaking with the voice of his deceased childhood love. His best friend, painted in the colors that hold all the words and thoughts he could never say.

    Summary

One arm propped up against the door frame as he leaned forward, messy black curls haloed in the warm light from the hallway, Mike drug his glassy eyes over Will’s body, taking in his rumpled hair, his favorite too-big The Cure t-shirt (the one with holes around the collar), and baggy grey sweatpants, before giving him a cocky grin.

Will was always enraptured by Mike’s beauty. He was like the perfect fusion of a Renaissance painting and a marble statue: simultaneously sharp angles and soft edges. Dark ringlets spiraling to caress the stark line of his jaw. Thin hooked nose nestled between gentle umber eyes. Prominent high cheekbones contrasting with plush downturned lips. Pale porcelain skin smattered with freckled constellations. He was an artist’s wet dream.

    “Hey.”

Will scoffed and crossed his arms. “Hey, yourself.”

They stood in silence for a moment, Mike leering as Will attempted to fix him with a fierce glare.

“Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

    “You’re drunk, Mike.”

    Summary

    “You prayed?”

Mike sniffled, chuckling as he said, “Yeah, don’t look so surprised. You saw me.”

    I saw you?

“At the altar this morning,” Mike finished, unaware he had answered Will’s inner question. “And I just… I couldn’t find a reason that God would put this in my life and not want me to have it. I feel like.. I’m closer to Him in being closer to you, because… I don’t know Will, it’s just a feeling. Maybe I’m crazy, but I’ve been praying on it so much and it.. This doesn’t feel like a sin, Will. I swear, it doesn’t. It did before. Before I prayed and I saw you, laying in the grass with me that Sunday and I just felt so seen by you, and it scared me. I was so terrified, Will, I thought that fear was going to kill me. But, knowing you, seeing all those things in you that I’ve wanted so much for myself… things that I have now, because I’ve known you… I’ve never felt like that. How could God not want that for us?"

    Summary

Will moves to NYU, leaving Hawkins seeking to find a life without the constant reminder of the pain, while Mike chooses to stay in Hawkins, rooted in the familiarity of the life he has always known. Before he leaves, Will writes him a letter. It contains everything he never said, everything he buried deep down, finally put into words.

A confession that Will believed he would take to his grave.

And it doesn’t fix anything at first.

The letter doesn’t bring closure like it was supposed to. It makes everything worse; it leaves Mike sitting with feelings he doesn’t know what to do with, or how to act on.

It creates distance that they both believed would never happen.

But Mike and Will always find a way back to each other.
