“Benn shot half of them because you were drunk.”
“What? How do you know that! Benn, you swore to secrecy!”
“I didn’t tell him Captain.”
“Luffy who told you that?”
Luffy points to the shore. “She did.”
The Ocean’s voice snickers and Luffy mirrors it as the Captain looks between the waters lapping playfully at the shore and the kid with the grin like his captain.
It’s a funny look, the kind men get when they see a tsunami bearing down on their head with no hope of escape. The face goes pale and the eyes go wide, and nothing save for the ocean has quite managed to produce this look.
The Ocean is most definitely pleased with her child.
“Oh hell.” The sailor swears, and she nods her head in agreement.
Oh Hell indeed– but he will bring that and more.

Like looking in a mirror they’d said. Of course they’d ignored the dirty clothes, the signs of abuse that were clear if you were looking for it. But looking at them, even at a glance, they shared a lot of the same characteristics.

Titans Tower is a big place, easy to get lost in, easy to bump into new people. Stephanie bumps into Kid Devil and they both learn some thing new about his old penpal.
Eddie's mad he was never told, Jason's surprised Eddie wanted to be told, and Steph is incredibly confused that it's the crimelord she''s protecting.
Now they take turns being the reluctant adult and do dumb stuff together, stuff like faking Jason's death a little too well. Steph would like it to be known that she wasn't involved in that last one. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the rest of it.

“Do you guys think Jon is attractive? Be honest,” Melanie mused, leaning back in her seat in exactly the way Jon was always telling her not to. Martin carefully ducked his head under the desk, pretending to be searching for another errant paper. He was paranoid that something in his face would betray his answer to Melanie’s question. Could other people sense when your heart was beating quickly? He didn’t think so, but just to be safe he wrapped his jacket more closely over his chest to muffle the hypothetical sound.
He didn’t even know what answer he’d give anyway. He certainly couldn’t just tell the truth. Some of them probably suspected – Georgie and Melanie more likely than the others. But he couldn’t bring himself to speak of it openly. It was easier if he let them imagine that they might be wrong and it might not be true – if he let them imagine that they could cut him some slack. That he might have enough dignity not to fall for someone who was so hopelessly out of his league and who, as everyone could very obviously discern, would never, ever, ever, ever view him as anything but a quasi-competent co-worker.
