He's pacing.
He's made so many rounds through the small hotel room that he's starting to worry about getting a surcharge for wearing it down too much.
The thought makes him stop, eyeing the window instead. Not for the first time, he considers just bolting, opening the window and climbing out, skipping town, never looking back. The room is on the second floor, but the balcony next door leads to the fire exit, he could totally do it. And even if not, falling to his death currently feels preferable to waiting for Steve and that girl.
Fully aware that he's a weak, weak man for Steve, Eddie still questions his sanity.

It’s not Wayne’s fault. He didn’t know what he was doing. He was just trying to help.
Eddie repeats this all to himself as he pulls into Steve Harrington’s driveway. He can’t believe the situation he’s put himself in.
He doesn’t think Steve can actually help, but Jeff insisted that he could and Jeff wouldn’t steer him into disaster on purpose. Steve agreed to keep it quiet, probably more for his own sake than Eddie’s, at the expense of some weed for his next party.

He closes the magazine and sets it down on the counter. Eddie will be home soon and it’ll be the first thing he looks for. He’s been waiting for the official article for months.
Dinner simmers on the stove while he texts Robin. She only recently convinced him to “stop being an old man” and just text her sometimes instead of calling her to ask one simple question. He pretended it didn’t hurt his feelings, but she’s right. He called a lot about silly little things that are better off as texts. This isn’t a silly little thing, but he’d rather wait to call her when Eddie’s home.

But he didn’t count on the fact there was one person in the room who, besides Eleven and Hopper, had the reason to be the most stir-crazy of them all — and Munson had practically made antagonizing Steve into an even bigger pastime than a professional goddamn sport.
There were a variety of one liners he liked to deploy when Steve would roll his eyes or let loose a huff of annoyance.
“What’s got your panties in a twist, Harrington?” he would ask, or, “Baby skip his nap today?”
A personal favorite of his seemed to be some variation of asking if it was Steve’s time of the month. “You on your period, sweetheart?” he’ll ask. It never failed to kill with the boys, who would fall all over themselves laughing when he asked — usually after whatever meeting they were in, because it also never failed to get Nancy apoplectic. Munson, to his credit, had only needed twice to learn to keep that one way under his breath and out of her earshot for fear she’d shoot his nuts off.
These questions also had the unique ability to make Steve as red as a fucking tomato which, like, fuck him, he guessed.
In which Steve learns a thing or two, by doing a thing or two.

He’s been trying to figure out what his own life is gonna look like without his nephew taking up his space, time, and money. He’s been shoving it back for a while.
But now the house is quiet and empty, and his phone only rings a couple times a week, and his fishing spot has become overrun with teenagers trying to escape the loneliness of this town since everything happened. He can’t fault them for it. He’d do the same.
The sky is clear tonight. The beer is cold. Everything is quiet except the bugs singing in the distance.

“It’s fine, just leave me here.” The man in question sighs and shakes his head, eyes still closed as he lays in the middle of the sidewalk.
“I…” Steve starts, looking around at the pedestrians who peer over their shoulders as they step around the scene carefully. “I could, but then when I see a headline later that a man was found frozen to the sidewalk outside Dunkin, I’ll probably feel bad.”
Mystery Man brushes the hair out of his face and cracks one eye open— big and brown— and Steve thinks the guy might start crying.
What the fuck is going on this morning? He wonders to himself.
“Ice is fucking slippery.”
“Yeah, that’s kind of its thing. C’mon,” Steve extends a hand that Mystery Man finally accepts, his gloved hand soft and velvety in Steve’s bare hand.
“Thanks. I’m uh, I’m Eddie.”
“Steve.”
Or, Gym Teacher and Hockey Coach Steve Harrington meets Eddie Munson outside of a Dunkin Donuts. As any New Englander knows, it's the beginning of a beautiful thing.

Steve is drunk.
He doesn’t know what time it is, anymore. He remembers Robin leaving, reminds promising her he’ll be okay, but that must’ve been hours ago, now. He watches as the condensation on his beer drips onto his thigh, making the light wash denim darken, and pretends he isn’t listening in on the conversation across the room.
It’s hard to make out with the party in full swing, with U2 still blaring from the speakers and a hoard of people between them, but Steve’s gotten good at reading body language. At reading expressions. At knowing who is a threat and who isn’t, and the three talking to Eddie Munson right now?
