Summary
Mike has spent months writing about the people he loves, but he still can’t write Will. Then, an old D&D campaign notebook starts writing Mike instead. Mike and Will revisit memories and finally face unspoken truths.

Mostly canon-compliant. Featuring memory pocket realities, unresolved feelings, mutual pining, emotional damage, a nosy, persistent notebook, some D&D game play but at a very high and limited level (mostly just rolls), eventual kissing, and eventually…well, they’re in college now. I’ll add warning tags and notes if they become necessary.
If anyone ever reads this, I thank you. It’s written so I can heal. I don’t plan for this to be too long. Each chapter will tackle one or two of the more significant Mike and Will scenes. I’ve also tried to throw some Conformity Gate easter eggs in, but if you’re not a fan of CG, don’t worry, it’s very subtle. As you can see, I haven’t written since my Skam and 13 Reasons days. The travesty but beauty of Byler dragged me here kicking and screaming. I hope you enjoy.

Summary
“Can I show you something?” Will asks, suddenly.
“Anything!” Mike responds.
“Okay, just trust me. We have to go.”
As they stand, Mike asks, “where are we going?”
“My place.” Will says as he settles his jacket over his arms.
Mike’s hand stills as he reaches for his jacket, his eyes snapping up to meet Will’s. Will’s eyes soften while holding his gaze, before gently nodding in encouragement. Mike’s lips part into a gentle smile before grabbing his jacket and standing fully to follow Will out of the diner.

15 years after graduating High School, Mike and Will spend a week together in Philly while Mike is on a book tour. Full of flashbacks to their times together over the last 15 years - a first kiss, slow dances, missed opportunities, and distance. And new adventures together - an art show, D&D night, and a trip to the movies. They spend the week slowly realizing they are hopelessly in love.
Title comes from Mumford & Sons "Not with Haste"

One arm propped up against the door frame as he leaned forward, messy black curls haloed in the warm light from the hallway, Mike drug his glassy eyes over Will’s body, taking in his rumpled hair, his favorite too-big The Cure t-shirt (the one with holes around the collar), and baggy grey sweatpants, before giving him a cocky grin.
Will was always enraptured by Mike’s beauty. He was like the perfect fusion of a Renaissance painting and a marble statue: simultaneously sharp angles and soft edges. Dark ringlets spiraling to caress the stark line of his jaw. Thin hooked nose nestled between gentle umber eyes. Prominent high cheekbones contrasting with plush downturned lips. Pale porcelain skin smattered with freckled constellations. He was an artist’s wet dream.
“Hey.”
Will scoffed and crossed his arms. “Hey, yourself.”
They stood in silence for a moment, Mike leering as Will attempted to fix him with a fierce glare.
“Aren’t you going to invite me in?”
“You’re drunk, Mike.”

There was a moment of silence before she continued. "I'm living in Paris—for work. I can't… they won't let him leave the country, and I can't move back fast enough for it to matter."
Will felt his face pale. "What about your parents?"
"They don't want anything to do with him, not after—"
"Yeah, I heard. What about…"
"Will, there's no one else. I've tried."
"Nancy, I can't… I can't just—"
"Please. I wouldn't be asking if there was another option."
Will bit the inside of his cheek. "Okay."
Or: Mike is on house arrest for 6 months and has no choice but to stay with Will, even though they haven't spoken in two years.
