Something inherent and unavoidable like breathing. Jonathan’s loneliness, his isolation were planted in him before he even knew what they were, the roots seeping into his very core. Nancy doesn’t know how to weed them out. She doesn’t know how to save him.

Will is going to die.
Not how he thought he would. Not in a mess of vines and slime at the end of the world or the razor sharp claws of a Demogorgon.
It'll be his own fault. It'll be punishment for something he tried to bury inside himself. They know what he is and they're doing it in the name of a god that hadn't been there for Will no matter how loud he cried.

Will gathers up all his courage into his sore arms, cradling bravery against his chest, holding it over his broken-and-then-healed ribcage. “Ever since I got back from the Upside Down, I’ve been in pain.”
“What do you mean?” Mike asks.
“It’s like I came back wrong. My body hurts pretty much all the time. It wasn’t that bad when it started, but it just kept getting worse and worse and now I’m just—” Will swallows the lump in his throat. “I’m crippled, basically. I’m sorry.”
Mike’s mouth opens and closes a couple times. “Hold on, did you say since the Upside Down? Three years ago?”
Will nods.
“And when you say ‘all the time’, you mean all the time?”
“The severity changes a lot, but yes.”
Mike looks… very concerned. “Even right now?”
It’s not funny, but he laughs. “Especially right now.”

Summary
Will forced himself to stop thinking. The Upside Down was closed for good. Eleven had close the gate last year and saved them all. His mother, Jonathan and Nancy had taken the Mind Flayer out of him. There was nothing more connecting him to that place. He was clean. Purged. And those stupid chills he got from time to time in the back of his neck were just his brain messing up with him. It was him not being able to move on from what happened in the past. It was him not being able to grow the fuck up already.
Dustin clapped his hands, the sound echoing in the calm night, making Will snapped out of his thoughts. “We can become heroes, Will. Honest to God American heroes. Like freaking Red dawn or something.”

“Mike! What– What happened?” he shrieked. “Why can’t I barely see?”
Mike sniffled, still stood in his spot not knowing what to say or how to talk to the boy in front of him. “Will… I– I don’t—”
Both the boys were frozen in their places. Will felt extremely sick, almost like he was about to throw up in any second. He lifted his hand towards his face to feel what was running down it. It was blood.
Will let out a cry. “What happened to my eye?”
Hawkins, 1988. Will Byers is back at the center of it all; his powers are back, the Mind Flayer too, and something mysterious is happening in Montauk. All the while, he’s juggling family, friends, and feelings he doesn’t fully understand.

Here is what Jonathan will not say: I stabbed my boss in the neck with a pair of scissors. I watched him die, and I didn’t even like him. I can’t leave you and Mom in California to go to Boston because I’m paralyzed by the fear something will happen, and you’ll both die, and I’ll be 3,000 miles away.
Ultimately, Jonathan will not lay his issues, his trauma, at Will’s feet and ask his younger brother, who cried when their father stepped on bugs and who has seen horrors Jonathan will never understand, to deal with it.

Summary
One of Jonathan's first memories, albeit fuzzy around the edges, was of Will coming home from the hospital for the first time.
He was sitting wide-eyed on the couch, watching as Mom was gently led into the house by Lonnie. It was one of the rare times he'd seen Lonnie calm, maybe even loving, towards her. In Mom's arms, swaddled in a fuzzy yellow blanket, was a sleeping newborn baby.
The part Jonathan remembers clearly was his Mom placing that tiny yellow bundle in his lap. He remembers Mom shushing when the baby stirred, and the baby giving a quiet yawn before settling.
In that moment, at just four years old, Jonathan felt like he was holding the sun in his too-small hands.
That version of his little brother — tiny and wrapped in a yellow blanket — is what Jonathan sees flash before his eyes when Will suddenly collapses to the hard, sandy ground in the Abyss. Falling in time with the skeletal form of the Mindflayer.
