The question was like Levi doused him with ice water, leaving his blood running cold. His first instinct was to emphatically say yes, it absolutely would make a difference. For the first time in a while, Levi stopped breathing at the sight of a man. It was the tan of his skin, the curve of his mouth, and the gold—those golden strands of hair that swept across Erwin’s forehead in wild locks instead of sitting stiffly atop his head, that did it.
He was just plain Erwin with his crooked nose and stupid eyebrows that Levi had ignored before. But in that moment, Erwin looked exactly like the type of handsome man that, had circumstances been different, Levi could have taken to bed and even learned to love unabashedly.

Levi inhales, quiet as anything, smelling cigarette smoke pomade sandalwood and caught between pulling away and leaning in and terrified of the impending gut-wrench of rejection—but it never comes. Erwin is still—so still that if his chest weren’t so close to Levi’s, he would have thought he’d stopped breathing. Levi’s heart hammers a tattoo against his chest, and he hopes desperately that Erwin can’t feel it.
