If he'd killed Yuusaku at Port Arthur, Ogata thinks, their father would have finally acknowledged him. A man as proud and as calculating as Hanazawa Koujirou would never have let his family line wither away so easily, not when he had another potential heir in his back pocket. Ogata would have been adopted as soon as he set foot back on Japanese soil—taught manners and dressed up in a stuffy braided uniform, pinned with all manner of medals and squirreled into a commission that he wasn't even remotely trained for. He's sure of it.
It's right there in his ill-fitting name, Hyakunosuke, clumsy and overwrought for a farm boy, but perfectly appropriate for a back-up son of the Hanazawa family. A second son's name, no less, because Yuusaku has always come first; even before he was ever conceived, the mere possibility that he might one day exist had been enough to keep Ogata shunted behind the spot reserved for him.

“There are rumors,” Terence says after a moment, which is odd. He’s not one to traffic in such things.
Dion faces him fully, bemused and amused in equal measure. “What rumors?” He shifts closer, past propriety, and murmurs, “Don’t hold out on me.”
Terence reddens. “No—they aren’t fit for polite company.”
That only makes him more curious. He watches as the elder Rosfield steps closer to the younger to murmur something in his ear. The archduke is perhaps taller by an inch, but they seem of a height. Twin Flames—an inadequate descriptor, as nothing else about them is alike. They are as similar as sun and moon. “Not fit for polite company,” he muses. That is interesting.

“I know,” Joshua repeats, as Clive’s fingers settle deeper in his hair, carding out the apology he can’t make. “I know you have to go. If we lose Rosalith, we lose—” Rosaria, he means to say, but Clive interrupts him.
“—I lose you. There isn’t a place I could send you on Storm safer than this city.” He smiles. “Allow me to do my duty, lord marquess.” The title sounds funny on his lips.
Joshua rises and sorts himself. “I can order you to stay.” He won’t, and he wouldn’t.
Clive’s smile tugs to one side. “You can try.”

Greg's mouth is open when Rodrick spits a wad of saliva between his opened lips. Greg's eyes widen with shock at Rodrick who looks far too impressed with himself. His instant thought was to spit it back out into Rodrick's face but his brother beats him to it.
"If you spit it out, I'm gonna hurt you real bad," Rodrick threatens and Greg doesn't want that but he also doesn't want his brother's spit in his mouth. He whines, finally understanding the expression of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. "What's the matter Greggy? You don't like the way I taste? That's too bad then..." Rodrick reaches for Greg's jaw, grips it so sharply the boy feels tears stinging his eyes.
