He said, “So, you cope by carving into yourself?”
Granger didn’t flinch. “No.” She took a slow breath. “If something happens, if I get hurt… at least I can control that.”
Draco hummed, considering her meaning, “Sounds like despair to me.”
She shot him a glare. “I’m studying. Practicing. Teaching myself how to heal. So when the time comes, I’ll have a semblance of control.”
Maybe it was the toxins he’d inhaled earlier, clouding his thoughts with something wicked and unfiltered. Or maybe he was already so ruthlessly toxic himself that it no longer mattered. The question clawed mercilessly; just how far could he take this? How much could he push her before she broke? She wanted control, that much was obvious. But so did he.
“Do you think someone would hurt you like that?”
Her hands tightened around the books. “Yes.”

She couldn't help but worry about him.
The man she hated.
Once hated....Had Draco deserved the curse Harry had inflicted upon him in the bathroom yesterday.
Deep down she knew the answer was no.And her heart was screaming at her to go visit Malfoy in the hospital wing. She needed to see for herself that he was ok.
Hermione shook her head as she tried to dispel her thoughts, her eyes following the flickering warm flame coming from the large fireplace in front of her.'You ok Hermione?' Ginny asked suddenly, snapping Hermione out of her trance.
Hermione glanced up at her friend, forcing a quick, small smile.
More memories from last night replayed in her mind….The cold water, Draco's blood covered shirt, the quietest 'Granger' that escaped his lips as they locked eyes in fear replayed in her mind once more.
'I'm fine Gin, just tired.' was all Hermione could say as she stood from her spot in front of the fireplace, knowing full well where she would be headed come later this evening once the entire Gryffindor common room was asleep.
