Kurumi found that despite its age, the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter had posed a question more thought provoking than she'd initially imagined possible.
What should the emperor have done? Taken the elixir and held onto hope, only for it to almost certainly be dashed in a few thousand years?
Or was burning the elixir and putting a definitive end to his suffering the right call?
Of course, no matter what the choice is, it’s not Kurumi’s choice to make.
She sighs, rubbing her eyes before sliding the closet door open, yawning as she drags herself to the kitchen. She really needs to get to sleep soon.
“Oh, heya, Kurumi!”
“Kurumi.”
The cafe’s closed by now, the two people before her being the ones to close up for tonight.
Kurumi grips the waist of her clothes. This isn’t going to be a fun conversation.
“I have a lead. Regarding Chisato’s heart.”

It’s still dark outside when I leave my run-down apartment. Walking along empty roads, streetlights illuminate the path as I make my way to the nearest train station.

But I’m not just applying to the support course.
I’m applying to the hardest program to get into in the country. The one where only a thousandth of a thousandth of all applicants get in.

It’s quiet today.
For the first time in God-knows-how-long, it’s quiet.
What should I do? Lazing around like this could be nice. Except I’ve only been doing it for about ten seconds and I tossing, and turning, and counting my ceiling tiles, and the chips in the paint in my walls, and—yeah, I think I’m physically incapable of doing that for more than a few minutes.
Maybe I could compose something? It’s been, like, what, a few months? Since my brain’s been occupied with trying to find a job so I don’t starve to death on my own. Yeah, I think composing something could be a good idea. Keep the creative juices sharp and all.
A few nights pass.
And, uh.
That old video is decidedly not my most viewed video anymore.
So, apparently, CPK is getting an anime adaptation.
That got announced yesterday morning.

It got released the night before.

I’ve always liked this battlefield.

I mean, some people think this map is ‘uncompetitive’ and ‘Luck-Based Chance Slop,’ but those people are freaking stupid! This map rules! If you can’t roll with the random earthquakes and item drops, then that’s just a skill issue! Get good, scrubs!

Rather, this story takes place within the confines of a world, shifted just ever so slightly in the future.

Our story begins a long, long time ago.
“Ah, hnn, IroP!”
A faint buzz fills the bedroom as a silver-haired woman writhes against the curve of a boomerang, bathed in a dim blue glow as the woman with the fox ears tugs on synthetic cords of wire, somehow thin, delicate, and tough all at the same time.
No, no, no, that isn’t right at all!
Perhaps… The distant future?
“Oh, CUM on! This is freaking endurance mode! If you wanna top, go queue top! That’s got to be against the rules! Reported!”
The fox-eared girl doesn’t acknowledge her opponent, keeping her back to the door from which the voice CAME; that would distract her from lavishing attention upon her idol, after all.
Wrong again! Let’s zoom out a little, shall we?
Meanwhile, A lone girl lies completely still in her futon. Not a trace of emotion can be seen on her face as her hands are frozen at her sides and a light shines from behind her eyelids.
This is neither the distant past nor the distant future!
Rather, it’s just a teensy, tiny bit ahead in a slightly different near future.

It’s not quite crashing and burning, she thinks.
There’s a metal bracelet on her left wrist. She rubs her index finger against her thumb. Puts out the cigarette over a patch of smooth metal, leaving bits of residue on its surface. An ember slips past the cracks and singes her skin. Oops.
The bracelet is a curled piece of… Well, who even knows at this point? It doesn’t matter. Her fingers trace the outline, up the spiral from one end to the other. They curl around the USB port, haphazardly welded on and caked in dust before finishing their journey.
She pricks her finger on the other end. Pulls a pair of frayed earbuds from the pocket of her dress pants.
She plugs them in.
“Hey. Sorry it’s been so long.”

She isn't quite sure how long she's been alive.

Yachiyo Runami can't die.
