Naim frowned,
“But Ryan’s always been-”
Marnie frowned,
“Masculine?”
Naim nodded dumbly,
“Yeah. He’s not like me. I was like, I was kinda like this, even before I moved to Bandi.”
Marnie shrugged,
“Maybe I’m wrong,” she said, standing up and brushing clay chips off the front of her apron, “I think Ryan is more, how do I say this? Open than you think he is. He probably had to use masculinity as a front, you know? Something to protect him against what he was feeling.”

Ryan exhales, smoke slipping past his lips. “Did it ever touch you?”
Naim’s stomach churns. He curls towards Ryan, shifting onto his side, as Ryan’s gaze lands on him, piercing. He shakes his head.
“Good,” Ryan says, lifting the cigarette to his mouth.
Naim thinks of photobooth pictures, of hot blood trickling down Ryan’s neck, of flame and fear. He presses a soft kiss to Ryan’s side, over his ribs, over the soft cotton of his shirt, and inhales his scent.
