“Ready?” Erwin asks, hiding his lips behind the final card.
“Always,” Levi responds and lays down another King.
Erwin smiles as though he couldn’t be more delighted with Levi’s play, and, for a heartbeat, Levi worries he’s fumbled.

“Twice,” Levi supplied helpfully, unmoved by the bewildered look his ambushed husband shot him.

“Levi,” Hange acknowledged, quiet and careful. Their fingers found the smooth surface of the whiskey tumbler again, drawing it closer. “Can I offer you a drink?”
They’d been drinking together a lot recently. It wasn’t something Erwin would encourage or even approve of, but Erwin was dead, so fuck him.
Levi didn’t answer for a few long, terse moments. Hange rose to retrieve another glass and the half empty bottle anyway, when a firm hand closed around their wrist and halted them in their tracks.
They turned back to Levi, the next question ready on their tongue, but the look in their friend’s sharp, empty eyes made the words die in their throat.
“I need your help.”
Oh, something was wrong wrong.

“Is that a wedding ring? Were you married?” the way she said it sounded almost offended, and Levi couldn’t help but snort, halting Falco’s admonishment in its tracks.
“Is that so hard to believe? That someone wanted to marry me?”
Gabi’s eyes widened, finally realising the social faux pas she had merrily launched herself into, and she raised her hands up in front of her, fingers spread.
“Uh, no! Of course not! I mean-” Falco nudged her shoulder, and she fell silent. It took real effort to hold back the huff of laughter tickling the base of his throat.
“No,” he said after a brief, uncomfortable pause, his good eye fixed to the dulled gold. “I wasn’t married. But someone did want to marry me.”
The kids exchanged a very unsubtle look before turning back to him.
“So… why didn’t you marry her?”
Levi scoffed softly.
“I didn’t marry him because he was my Commander.”

The rain has stopped. A breeze ruffles Levi’s hair, dissipating the last of the steam from the tips of his ears. It carries the scent of ozone, dew-dropped grass, the mineral tang of the mud. Levi’s tongue is too big in his mouth. He watches Erwin loom over him and is suddenly seized by the sense that he is teetering over the precipice, gazing over the expanse of something indescribable, enormous, unfathomable. There is a hand lovingly placed in between his shoulder blades, and deft fingers are weaving wire through his sternum, knitting the wound shut.
The clouds part, and sunshine unfurls from behind Erwin’s broad shoulders.
“Fight with us, Levi.” His voice shakes with conviction. “We need you.”
The hand at Levi’s back gives a gentle push, the wire pulls taut, and Levi soars.
