“You’re afraid he’ll run?”
“He’s a bit skittish, for sure.” Phil sighed and drug a hand down his face. “I don’t want to force him to stay, if he wishes to leave, but…” He paused and approached the counter to set down the stack of clothes and start re-folding them, if only to have something distracting to do with his hands. “I don’t think it’s best for him to be on his own, either.”
“Well,” Niki halted her work and moved to lean on the counter in front of Phil. Her dark eyes met his. “Has he tried to run before?”
“No, but-“
“Does he seem to like it there?”
Phil faltered. “Uh.. I think? He seemed pretty eager to learn how to maintain the fire and gather water…”
“Then don’t be so worried. He’s not going anywhere. Really, Phil, you have to trust him.” Niki smiled softly.
“I haven’t known him long, and he’s still a child.” Phil argued weakly.
“You’re trying to get him to trust you, right?” Niki asked, but Phil knew it was rhetorical, so he did little more than nod weakly. “Then extend to him the same courtesy.”

“Bullshit. That’s the dumbest thing you could do.”
“And why would that be?”
Too many responses to count flashed through Tommy’s mind. This man was going to kill him, there was no denying that. No denying that Tommy had been stupid. That mantra had gotten him through the night, sure, but it wasn’t true, and now he was going to die.
In the forest, he didn't know what was coming to kill him. Now, though, he knew it would be this man, with his soft cloak and softer eyes, Tommy wasn’t so afraid.
Might as well encourage him to make it quick.
“Because I know where you live, you rebel fuck,” he spat. “I know exactly where we are.”
