Summary
In the small town of Hawkins, Indiana in the ’80s, loving each other openly feels impossible. Will is upset that he must hide his relationship with Mike after longing for years and finally finding the strength to come out, terrified of remaining a secret forever, while Mike is haunted by the guilt of hiding his love—and himself.
With prom approaching, and both growing tired of hiding while reluctant to be seen as just friends (at least around the Party—this is the ’80s), they begin to work through their feelings on their own and together, eventually promising not to end their first year of dating in secret.
Mike sees a chance to find the courage he’s been missing and make up for Snowball—and the months he forced Will to stay hidden.

Summary
Mike can’t bear looking at himself, hating his reflection that highlights all his insecurities and everything he is not, all while wrestling with complicated feelings about his ex-girlfriend and best friend, who feels like something more. After Eddie’s death, the person he idolized, it feels like Mike lost himself all over again, sinking back into a version that isn’t him—The Normal Mike—even three years later.

Summary
Both Mike and Will are pushing down feelings but like the pipes at the MAC-Z, they can’t be held in forever and eventually rupture leading to long overdue conversations (cough cough the painting!) and confessions.

Mike is confused as fuck and stressing about his sexuality, while Will is trying his hardest to convince himself he’s over Mike (of course he’s not—these idiots can’t stay away from each other).
Mike does everything in his power to deny the truth he fears most: that he’s in love with his best friend, and that his relationship with El was nothing but fake. He tries to hide it, but someone helps him see that being different doesn’t have to be so scary.

Will perks up, “I-I thought you didn’t-”
“I did care, Will.” Mike cuts in abruptly, inching closer. “It made me realize something.”
Mike could see that Will was shaking now. Fidgeting with the hem of his jacket. “W-what things?” He stutters.
Mike gently reaches for Will’s hands, steadying his fidgeting. “Will look a me.” He whispers, and Will listens. “I’m saying... I don’t want to be this Tammy.” He rolls his eyes, and Will laughs. “I want to be your Mike.”

Mike’s POV during Will’s coming out and the realization that he doesn’t want to be Will’s Tammy, pushing him to finally confess his feelings before he loses Will for good this time.

“Well,” Mike shrugs, swallowing hard in a desperate attempt to soothe his very, very dry mouth, “I don’t know why someone wouldn’t be interested in you.”
“Oh?” Will says, and it’s definitely teasing now, enough for Mike to feel himself turning warm, all down his neck and to the tips of his own – sadly unpatterned – socks. “Someone?”
“Yeah.” Mike nods. Oh, god. This is fine. “In a very arbitrary sense of the word. Just– people. Someone.”
Mike is approximately ninety-eight percent sure that his feelings are requited. That last two percent, however, has really been throwing him for a loop.

They stay like that for a little longer than necessary, then reluctantly separate, still looking at each other. Will can't hold the eye contact for long, and turns away, biting down a smirk.
"Goodnight, then," he breathes out.
"Yeah. Goodnight," Mike nods nervously and smiles. That same stupid dorky smile.
