Summary
Derek Hale is a Class Five Sentinel — one of the most powerful in federal service — and he's falling apart. Four years after his former Guide used their bond to crawl inside his head and sell state secrets through his senses, he's sworn off Guides entirely. But the longer he goes without one, the more his senses fragment: zone-outs, feral episodes, walls through which he puts various colleagues. The Bureau of Sentinel-Guide Affairs gives him an ultimatum — accept a new Guide or be locked in a containment facility for everyone's safety.
Enter Stiles Stilinski: newly manifested, top of his class, already fired from two field placements for being smarter than his supervisors and incapable of keeping that information to himself. The omega gawked at him and barely paid attention to the other competitors Talia was mentioning and Derek smiled at the thought of having all of his attention. Stiles blushed from the tips of his ears to his neck and began to run his fingers through his hair while looking away.
Derek began to wonder how far down that blush traveled when he shook his head and tried to focus on the imminent battle. He caught the last of what his mother was saying. “—have a good fight and good luck.” More clapping and the horn that signaled the beginning of the fight sounded.

They don't have a chance to reconcile as they are both captured by hunters working under Gerard. They turn the alpha feral in order to get him to kill Stiles but something different happens instead, leaving the two boys to work out their feelings and issues while recovering from the encounter and trying to rebuild the Hale pack.

Stiles, unfortunately for his blood pressure, starts understanding Derek far too well, including the parts Derek is trying hardest to hide.
