Before he could finish his sentence, a loud hissing sound came from James's direction, drawing everyone's attention. Sirius turned his head just in time to see James frowning deeply at his cauldron. The liquid inside was bubbling dangerously, threatening to spill over the rim.
Slughorn, who had been perusing the classroom, noticed too. "Steady, Potter, steady!" he called from across the room, waving his hands as though trying to calm the cauldron from a distance.
But it was too late.
With a sudden, sharp crack, the potion exploded. Silver mist burst from the cauldron in a cloud, covering James and—more importantly—Lily in a thick layer of shimmering steam.
