NBK falls through, and suddenly Dylan has no idea how to talk to Eric anymore — or if he even wants to. He quits replying to Eric’s emails after he moves to Arizona, and eventually Eric stops trying.
Fifteen years later, he unexpectedly runs into Eric on Facebook. Dylan is surprised that he wants to reconnect with Eric; even more so that Eric wants it, too. Their friendship is still there, though, and it doesn’t take long for things to feel normal between them again… mostly. Eric won’t talk about whatever happened to him overseas, and he acts weird every time he happens to be around Dylan’s fiancé, but — well, Dylan knows the former isn’t really his business; and as for the latter… that’s just Eric. Dylan’s sure everything will turn out fine.

The bathroom is covered, wall-to-wall, with scratched up stickers and scrawls of permanent marker. The floors squeak, warp under Vlad’s boots. The noise from the venue echoes through the walls, and Eric is sure no one can hear them. Even if he were to yell, or try to fight Vlad-- No one would come running for him. Locked inside the venue bathroom, they’re in their own dimension. The room trembles, and Eric feels the cold tile of the floor against his face. He’s shaking.

It's these moments that make you question which side of Vladik is the real one. You've never been sure if the sadism was who he really was behind the mask he wore every day, or if this, his kindness, his thoughtfulness, was the real thing. They both seemed genuine.
