Summary
It's been just under a year since Jonathan's brother got lost in the woods for a week, a shame that still weighs on him heavily. There's a lot that weighs on him these days, like his mother's new relationship with the town sheriff.
As if that weren't enough, now a masked killer is terrorising Hawkins. A real life slasher nightmare.
Jonathan can't let anything happen to his family. Fearing that the police aren't doing enough, he starts trailing the investigation. This is a slippery slope, bringing him ever closer to the killer itself.

Summary
In a canon-divergent, post Season 3 Hawkins where Nancy and Jonathan have already gone their separate ways a series of erratic demodog attacks begins tearing through the town. A new strategy of pairing Steve's instinctive, close-combat fighting with Jonathan's sharp eye for patterns and evidence, and sending them out together as a rapid-response team emerges.
Neither of them is happy about it.
It doesn’t help that they’re also working the same shifts at Family Video—alongside a coworker who seems far more comfortable with Jonathan than anyone else. Between overlapping hours, increasingly dangerous patrols through Hawkins and the slow unearthing of old resentments, Steve and Jonathan are forced into a partnership built on proximity, necessity, and a mutual refusal to acknowledge how well they work together.
As the demodog threat escalates, the line between enemies, allies, and something far more dangerous begins to blur.
Some threats you can fight head-on.

Steve sort of feels like maybe he spent his whole life mourning what his father was and now that he’s dead, maybe it’ll be like Jonathan said. Maybe he’ll need to mourn everything he wasn’t.
Or: Steve's dad dies suddenly and he doesn't know how to process his grief. Jonathan, however, is there to help hold him together.
