Alex can’t stand him from the start.
The guy’s personality is, objectively, annoying. He has the worst taste in ties, which to Alex says a lot, and he can’t go more than five minutes without alluding to his pedigree in some way (Alex knows this because he and Nora have made a drinking game out of it at work functions).
Still, it doesn’t explain the weird surge of resentment he gets every time he looks at the guy. And not understanding it might be the most annoying part of all.
He just wishes he knew why.

When Alex meets Henry, the first thing he thinks is that Henry does in fact smell like a library. But like a really nice library, with a tea shop and tons of natural light, and rows upon rows of leather-bound books. Maybe one of those rolling ladders, too, with a super hot librarian on the bottom rung.
Anyone with eyes and a nose would easily come to the same conclusion.

Excerpt: “I would never make you leave just because we couldn't have sex. You don't know that?” Henry’s hand is warm and solid against his cheek but even it can’t make Alex lie and say he did know. Him not answering is answer enough and Henry’s face softens. Like he knows he’s carrying Alex’s vulnerability in the palm of his hands. Like he knows it’s a fragile thing—that they’re approaching non casual territory. If either acknowledges it they both might just break.
Henry does the best thing. He says, “ok, alright. That’s alright. Now you do.” There’s something like hurt in the corner of his smile, in the crease of his eyes though. Like it hurts him that he's hurt Alex.
“I’m sorry.” Alex says because he needs to say it. “I trust you. I’ve just—No one’s ever cared before about me being sick during sex. Not really. But you, you do.” He hurries to say. “It’s not that I thought you would make me...”

They’re sitting in the living room of the brownstone, the two of them surrounded by their favorite people in the world, a night of board games long abandoned in favor of mocking the eighth season of Game of Thrones.
“God, don’t you have an off switch?” June groans, laughing as she chucks a piece of popcorn in Alex’s direction while he rambles passionately about the international legal implications of the Red Wedding. Nora cackles. “Whatever you do to thank Henry for putting up with you, it’s not nearly enough. Jesus, I can’t believe he put a ring on your loud mouth.”
Or: Alex is fine. Really, he’s fine — he just wants Henry to stay, even if Alex is too much. Henry just wants his husband back.

Summary
Henry and Alex had never gotten along particularly well. Despite living in the same neighborhood and attending the same schools since they were eight they had never gotten particularly close. In fact, if Henry were to take a guess, he would think that Alex flat out hates him. Alex’s older sister and one of Henry’s best friends, June, is always quick to correct him. Alex doesn’t hate you, she would say. He just doesn’t understand you. Henry didn’t quite believe her.
They aren’t close. So Henry can’t help but wonder why he seems to be the only one who notices that something is wrong.

Alex can vaguely hear the audio, and that’s when he knew, he fucked up , playing in the back of his mind. It’s the track to his funeral, and apparently whatever sex-related-challenge-esque-expression Henry’s face is sporting at the moment.
That’s how he lands on his back, wrists gripped firmly in Henry’s hands, arms folded at the elbow and sitting next to his head. He bites his lip, refusing the giddy smile finding its way onto his face. This was his goal. It’s always his goal. It’s a lovely goal.
He starts, “You are…” but trails off as his gaze flits over Alex’s face, focusing on his lips before moving up again. Fully clothed, Alex feels exposed. Vulnerable. And, well, there’s no one else he’d be happier to be vulnerable with.
“A menace. A plague? Oooh, you’ve been using reprobate a lot recently.” A hum, just for kicks. “How’s-"
“Beautiful. You’re beautiful, Alex.”

The question breaks the spell that had settled over them. Alex finally pulls away, using his sleeves to wipe the moisture off his face, and then shakes his head.
“You know if I could tell you, I would.”
“What does that mean?”
Alex huffs. “You’re a smart guy. Figure it out.”
Yeah, he’s a smart guy. But with things like classic English authors, or old man activities like Sudoku or Mahjong all wrapped up in an afghan, or when it comes to picking out a matching rug for their couch. And yes, he’s good at riddles, but not the kind flung at him by beautiful Latino roommates mid-breakdown.

Vodka has never been his friend, but he can't bring himself to regret the result.

The next exchange comes through loud and clear and shuts Alex down completely.
“And what about her father? Is he in the picture?” the worker asks, “We’ll need to notify him.”
“No,” is the answer, “It’s embarrassing, but I never got a name. It was just a drunken, one night stand with a cowboy.”
Alex freezes, he can literally feel his blood run cold, and he remembers where he knows that scent. It was easily the drunkest night of his life. His biggest regret was losing the handsome stranger.They both mess up, but they've been looking for each other ever since. How could they not?
