But after a hostage crisis and a new strain of fear toxin, everything starts slipping, and Clark sees more than he's supposed to; more than Bruce knows how to give.
Because letting someone close means letting them see the damage, and Bruce isn't sure what's left of him underneath.
Clark would stay anyway.

Martha shook her head slowly, a grim, defeated expression settling on her face. "No, Clark, that's not what I mean. They… they still exist to this day. Thriving, even. More powerful than ever, by some accounts."
She sighed, a deep, shuddering sound that spoke of decades of suppressed fear. She averted her gaze, turning her head to stare out the window, at the rolling hills of their quiet farm, as if looking for solace in the familiar landscape, before finally muttering out the name.
"Gotham."
