    Parker jumped down from the bed and drug a plastic chair from the rec room over. It’s legs screeched across the floor. “Now, I wanna be clear. I know you, rightfully, won’t believe me, but I don’t actually enjoy hurting people.” He climbed up on the chair, situated back by Colton’s knees. He leveled the hammer at his face. “I’m not, like, a sociopath.” He let out a musical laugh. “I honestly get a little squeamish with gore.” He patted Colton’s thigh with his free hand, blowing out a regretful breath. “I know what it’s like, you know. I was beaten half to death once. True story! The jackass did it all wrong though.” He reached up, patted his cheek.

    The man snorted a derisive breath through his nostrils. “Peachy,” he said with a crooked grin, and despite the humor, there was something dangerous—feral—about that smirk. Maybe it was the rugged jawline or the mangled scars, the blood slowly dripping from the split in his lip or the finger tapping at the butt of his gun; but Roy’s instincts sparked aflame. He needed this man. He was the one.

    Before Roy could fully think it through, he barreled ahead and asked, “You got any plans for the next month?”

    The man arched an eyebrow, his gaze narrowing as he stared straight at Roy. “No,” he slowly said, the word careful and drawn out with his wariness. “Sounds like you might, though.”

    In which Roy hires Jason to accompany him on a trip to pick up an expensive stallion; and while sleeping beneath the stars and hunting rattlesnakes, Roy sees a side to this rough, rugged man that irrevocably stirs Roy's heart.

    In a diner somewhere in the Midwest, in front of two dozen pairs of eyes, Jason presses the barrel of his gun against the back of Roy’s head and says: “No one move or I’m gonna blow his brains out and ruin everyone’s evening.”

    The gun moves from Roy’s head to rest against the back of his neck, the metal warm from being pressed against Jason’s side in his underarm holster before he pulled it out on Roy. It feels like a kiss. Roy bites the inside of his cheek to keep himself from smiling.

    Jason and Roy are criminals living on the run, but all roads lead to Gotham.
