Summary
Bree Davenport's heart is a revolving door with no place to stay. She doesn’t know how to stop, how to brake, where the brakes even are—
Because who, with a chip in their neck and muscles built to crush and chop and burn but never break, would ever know how to stop?
She knows that Mr. Davenport says that he loves her. That her brothers love her in their own ways, but—
She knows that Adam doesn’t know how to love without it bruising, that Chase’s healing is the only super fast about him because he had to heal fast, because the bruises would linger if he didn’t because Adam doesn’t know his own strength and that's how you show love, right?
She knows that Chase doesn’t know how to love without condescending, because when you’re built to be at the top of the mountain you never know how to find your way down, because Chase cries when Spike comes out and he doesn’t know who he is when he’s not in control.
Bree knows that she herself loves like a lightning bolt. That she loves hard and fast in a way that doesn’t know how to stop, that she dated Owen long after she stopped liking him like that—if she ever did in the first place—because that’s what girls do, right? They love like it’s a marathon.

Summary
When Naerys goes to get on the ship, for a moment she looks across the Narrow Sea to the south. Somewhere down there, her mother’s bones rest on the Isle of Lys.
Maybe someone burned them in the Valyrian style. Maybe someone buried them in more Westerosi style. Naerys would not know—she has never stepped foot in her mother's homeland. Has never even left King's Landing herself.
But no matter what happened to her, Larra styled herself free. She got out.
And no matter how much Aegon raged and threaten to raze before he stormed out and likely rutted himself into one of his mistress’ beds—perhaps even Daenys sneaking out of the Maidenvault again—Naerys is on her way out of this place.
Like her mother decades hence, she is heading to a foreign land for a marriage that she would not have wished for if she could have had more of a choice, but also like her mother, Naerys is making a second bargain as well, that involves the possibility of her own freedom.
(When Naerys finds herself looking at the Stranger's arms, she makes a fateful bargain regarding her daughter's fate- the same bargain that her father and mother each, in their own ways, made with hers.)

Summary
When Quynh finally emerged from the sea, the iron finally rusting away after all of these years, she found that five centuries had passed.
And while she had dreamed, off and on, of a pale, unfamiliar man with a coward’s heart hanging above a frozen field, she had convinced herself that it had to be nothing more than a dream.
Because in those visions, Andromache had abandoned the search. Had stopped her quest.
And that couldn’t be right. Andromache would never do that to her. They were sealed in steel and sugar, in blood and in wine, in arrows and axes, the bite of each other’s blood stolen from the lips, holy in the only way that Quynh knew after so long away from her family’s faith.
They vowed their marriage to each other on over a dozen battlefields around the world, died in each other’s arms, woke in each other’s arms with blood on their mouths, tasted dragon fruit and lychee from each other’s lips, breathed each other’s first and last so many times that Quynh doesn’t remember what it’s like not to have her oxygen entwined with Andromache’s.
It’s impossible to imagine that there was a lifetime in which Andromache ever stopped searching. Not Quynh’s Andromache.

Summary
There is a woman on Emma’s front doorstep, and there are tears in her eyes.
She flings her arms around Emma’s shoulders, squeezing tighter than Emma would ever let anyone inside of her personal boundaries. “God,” the woman says, voice nearly breaking over the words, “It’s been so long. I’ve been doing everything I possibly can to get back to both of you—"
The woman turns her mouth towards Emma’s—
And Emma jerks back.
Maybe, once a long time ago, she thought that she might be interested in something like this, in women, in someone but her boyfriend—
It took years for Emma to even let in Killian. Why would she ever let some random stranger kiss her?
And so Emma pulls back quickly, sharply, and demands: “Who the hell are you?”
The woman swallows, hard. “That’s right,” she says, “You don’t remember who I am. Of course you don’t.” Her posture immediately pulls tight and back. “Regina Mills. I’m the Mayor of Storybrooke, Maine. And I need to speak to you about you and your son’s past.”
(In which Emma opens the door of her NYC apartment to find Regina Mills with a memory potion in hand, desperate to show Emma that she and her son Henry are missing someone important.)

Summary
Emily remembers waking up in the hospital after surgery, no one but JJ in there with her.
There were tears in JJ’s voice as she said, “It’s going to devastate them, to see you die.”
Emily knew that they all cared. That she had friends.
But Spencer and Derek had been dating for ages before she ever got swept up between them. They’ll grieve, probably, but—
They’ll be fine. It’s not like she was their girlfriend or anything. She hasn’t been anyone’s girlfriend in a very long time, no matter how much some part of her yearned to finally anchor herself.
She hopes that they move on. That would be better than the alternative, she has to think.
They'd only just started dating—if you can even call what they were doing dating at all. She might have wanted it to be, but she knows, in practice, that it was just friends accepting her into bed because they wanted someone that they trusted to have some fun with. They should be able to move on, right?
(When Emily fakes her own death, she has been sleeping with Derek and Spencer for about a month- but she might already be in love with them. They don't love her back, though, right? There's no way she's haunting them like they're haunting her.)

Summary
Sam doesn't know that sometimes, when she can't stand the pressure that she's under, when she is staring down at her stomach in the mirror and is unable to recognize it as her own, she drives over to Santana Lopez's house.
She knows she's riding the line any time that Santana ducks her head between Quinn's thighs and makes her see god in a way that kneeling in the pews at church never did.
But for a moment, when Santana's acrylics dig into Quinn's back, when she rides that wave, it's impossible not to chase the closest to euphoria that the ex-head of the Celibacy Club has ever felt.
If anyone found out the truth, she could claim that this is just an experiment. That this is just girls being girls, letting off some steam.
But if she's honest with herself about what she sees when she looks in the mirror, she knows that she has never felt more settled in her own skin, more at home in her own body, stretch marks and all, than when she is with Santana, giggling in her bed, nibbling at her skin, tasting the sweat from under a cheerleader's uniform.
(Her junior year, instead of cheating on Sam with Finn, Quinn ends up in a secret friends-with-benefits relationship with Santana Lopez.)

Summary
Lucy refuses to lose either of them to the veil of death. To the transition to ghosthood. Lucy has had enough loss in her life, and she refuses to have another Norrie. She refuses to lose another home. George and Lockwood are both hers, now.
So she drags them to bed and wraps her arms around both of them.
Sometimes, it’s so hard to get the motions to connect. To get three bodies to understand that they are each other’s anchors rather than poles on magnets seeking to escape each other, especially when they can all sense different things when it comes to their ghosts.
But in this moment, Lucy listens as she never has before. Listens to the beat of hearts and the pace of breaths in the chests beneath her ear, alive in the way that the creatures that they investigate are not.
George reaches out. Touches, hands calloused but tender against both of them.
And Lockwood looks at them both, gaze refusing to be torn away.
And for a moment in time, the three agents of Lockwood & Co. just breathe.
(After the case of the bone glass, the three agents of Lockwood & Co. start dragging each other into cuddles after cases, and something new blossoms.)

Summary
When humans are born, they are born with songs playing through their ears.
They say that you are hearing the song of the universe when you hear it. They say that this is the song of people’s souls. The song of a heart desperate to find its other half. They say that once upon a time, the gods reached down and rended one half of the soul from the other, man from woman, each meant to be half of a perfect whole.
(They say that Nimona was born wrong, because she could change shape, because she was neither man nor woman, because when she was a child, Nimona thought that she had heard the song on the air, but all she truly heard was the sound of the town burning, the world ending, as everyone turned on someone that they didn't understand, because it was easier to be afraid than to be curious with an open heart.)
Nimona goes a thousand years before she hears the snatch of song in her ears.

Summary
The blond stranger frowns as he looks at her. “Where’s Ed?” he asks.
But before Archie even gets to say a word, Jim is breaking away from their hug with Oluwande, stepping in front of her with a knife in hand and a scowl on their lips.
And even though Archie’s been fighting longer than most of these people have been sailing, there’s something that warms in her chest at the notion.
Some others’ eyes go wide at the blade. At the twist of Jim’s mouth. At the way that Jim bares their teeth as they say, “Any of you pendejos want to get to her, you go through me, got it?"
Meanwhile, Oluwande smiles at Archie, and gods, that brightness directed at her is nearly blinding.
“You must be someone really important to Jim,” he says, and offers out a hand, “Call me Olu. Thanks for keeping them alive for so long.”
Jim rolls their eyes as they peel away from the bearded man. “It was a team effort,” they say, but there is something so fond in their voice that is likely far more for Olu than for Archie.
She knows that anyone else would be jealous of him and his soft smile and the warmth, but the snake inside of her craves warmth. Craves the sun.
And Olu smiles as bright as the sun.

Summary
By the end of the final speeches, Clove gets back on the train with Brutus.
Katniss stays.
Clove goes.
And whether Clove likes it or not, whether she’ll ever admit it, some sinew of her heart digs itself into the train station in Twelve the last time that she and Katniss kiss at the platform and Katniss’ hand cups itself around the back of her neck, fingers entwining in the curls at the nape of Clove’s neck, perfectly soft thanks to her stylists’ work.
It’s a terrifying thought. She’s supposed to hate Katniss. Katniss killed Cato like a dog.
Katniss is supposed to hate Clove, because instead of Katniss getting to go home with her perfect baker’s boy, she’s been stuck with a knife-edged girl.
And yet, as the train pulls away, Clove stares out the window and wonders when exactly she dug a knife into her own heart and bled out enough to stain the Girl on Fire’s feet.
(When Clove survives the Hunger Games because of a "star-crossed lovers" story, she has to find a way to stitch herself back together while still playing the part of a doting lover to the nation- and finding a way not to confuse her feelings for Katniss in the process.)

Summary
The fact of the matter is that you are a doctor, now.
You don’t need the universe. You don’t need the Doctor. You just need the people here on earth.
You don’t need to fix the Doctor, and you don’t need the Doctor to fix you.
You are not second fiddle to the Doctor, or Rose Tyler, or any of the rest.
But you deserve to have all of that, don’t you think? You deserve to have someone who treats you like the stars. You deserve to have someone who looks at you like you aren’t a second place, a silver medal to another girl’s golden hair, but as if you are the universe.
You’ve seen emptiness. You’ve seen the end of all things.
And you are going to burn out someday, you know, but it won’t be on the TARDIS. It won’t be because you were overlooked. It will be because you burned bright as can be, helping other people, doing what you could to save the world, but also because you let yourself live your own life.
And on a round in the hospital, you meet a nurse named Rory Williams.
(Martha and Rory both get a second chance at love with someone that understands them better than anyone else could.)

Summary
Once, she’d had dreams, after furtive hook-ups in college, the girls she’d taken back to her dorm room to bite into their bottom lips, the experiments and explorations of soft skin instead of stubble, of wide hips instead of flat stomachs, until she’d had to accept the fact that there was no chance of her burying her want for women.
She’d thought that one day she would get to be out.
But when she’d gotten accepted to the job at the prosecutor’s office, and she’d thought that she could do good, and she’d seen the cracked door of the closet slam shut on her aching fingers.
It nearly broke a bone in her chest, and maybe it did, to freeze herself up into the closet.
But she’d had—hope is too much of a word for lips that always strive to be so precise in language, but it is accurate, in its own way, for the belief that maybe she could make some change from the inside.
And then that case.
And then that fucking case.
Jack McCoy overturns same-sex marriage in New York just so that he can put someone away for murder, and it is a price that Serena cannot bear to pay.
The tides are turning, and she is planning on turning with them.
She has to, to live with herself.

Summary
Lauren sees it in an instant.
For all that the team was raised to be complete with five, they have become used to fighting with six. There is a missing spot, next to Lauren, next to the Red Ranger, that would normally be filled by a flicker of sunlight, a flicker of gold, that has been filled by Yellow instead, lemon-yellow instead of sunlight, and thus, there is a gap next to Mia.
Mia is in danger. There is a group of overwhelming moogers, super-charged by the power of the Sanzu river, and if Lauren can't move, then Mia will be drowned.
And Lauren specifically can’t lose Mia.
It’s not a rational thing, what Lauren does next, throwing herself between the Nighlok’s blast and her Pink Ranger.
Or maybe it is.
Maybe when a girl has been raised to be a sacrifice, when she has been raised to one day die in the pursuit of saving the world, she is more predisposed to throw herself into danger in order to protect others.
(Lauren Shiba was raised to be a sacrifice to save the world, and when Mia is in danger, she doesn't know how to turn that off.)
