“Beirut ’88?” Nicky offers over the headset.
Joe sighs and risks a glance. Nicky meets his eyes for a fraction of a second, raising an eyebrow, before turning back to the road.
“Practical as always, my love,” Joe concedes and hears Nicky laugh. It is no secret this is not one of Joe’s favorites.
“See you soon,” Nicky promises, and Joe has just enough time to suck in a breath before Nicky wrenches his steering wheel and slams his car into Joe’s, crumpling the front passenger side and sending him flying into the sea.

Summary
“Are you okay?” said Seb, when they had all sat down. The night was black and noiseless and it sat like a blanket over the five of them.
Nile was quiet as she drew her knees up to her chest against the cold. “Not really,” she admitted.
The fireworks were gorgeous. They’d bought a lot of red and gold, and they trailed down together over and over again to fizzle out against the huge backdrop of the open sky. When she shut her eyes she could see them light up the darkness through her closed eyelids.
“I was never meant to live this long,” she said, voice tucked like a secret under the noise. “I was never supposed to see this. You get me?”
“I do. I’m sorry.”
Nile turned to him and tilted her head. “You’re the best thing about my life, you know,” she said. “All of you.” She glanced at her watch, and back up at the stars. It had gone midnight. She’d been six years old this time a hundred years ago, staring up at the sky.
Or: A perspective on nearly a hundred years of friendship and change, and what that does to a person.

Summary
“Nile?” Joe asks. “You alright?”
It takes Nile a minute to gather herself. Another firework goes off outside, and hot red light bleeds in through the shutters, painting Nile’s sweat-slick skin. Joe tugs a shirt on and approaches her.
“A nightmare?”
She nods. “But it wasn’t…” She gulps, and looks him in the eyes, and he understands.
He sits on the floor, an accommodating distance from her mattress. “You wanna talk about it?”
Nile blinks down at the sheets. She pauses for a long moment, then says, “‘S just, uh… The fireworks. They sound like gunshots.”
Joe nods, having already guessed. She’s still young, he realizes, with clarity. She was only mortal, in Afghanistan, a few weeks ago. It’s jarring, to say the least. He almost can’t remember anymore how it felt to be so… new.
“Maybe a distraction?” She requests, then adds, with humour, “Not Monopoly, please.”
Joe smiles. “That I can do.”
