Meeting new people, chasing your passions and even possibly finding love. Will finds the last one to be a lot less easy than the others.In between all the awkward, unimpressive, flat-out underwhelming dates, he gets the feeling that something is fundamentally wrong. Missing.
Maybe the problem isn't the concept of dating itself, but it’s who he can’t stop comparing everyone to.

He seems to suddenly realise what he’s doing, as if his body moved without his permission. “Uhm. Like–” His breathing is heavy, “Like… Right now?”

“You should’ve seen the way you ran in here, man. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you move so fast.” His roommate takes a long pull of the joint dangling in his fingers. “You’re fuckin’ whipped, bro.”
Mike knows he looks stupid, unable to control the way his eyebrows furrow and his lips curl in complete confusion. Then his roommate rolls his eyes and makes a gesture like he’s cracking a whip, complete with sound effect. His cheeks heat up, the realization suddenly dawning on him.
He thinks Mike was on the phone to his girlfriend.
He thinks Mike has a girlfriend.
He thinks that Will is Mike’s girlfriend.
Everyone at college thinks Mike has a girlfriend. There's just one problem. The 'girlfriend' in question is Will Byers. Mike's best friend. Platonic with a capital P. He's so screwed.

“Come on,” Mike argues. “Think of it like… a test drive. You’ll get the full Mike Wheeler boyfriend experience. It’s miserable! You’ll be over me in no time!”
They only have one last summer before they go off to college, and Will is sick of keeping his cards so close to his chest. So, in a fit of alcohol-induced bravery, he tells Mike everything.
Instead of breaking his heart, Mike proposes a deal: they’ll date for the summer. Get Mike out of Will’s system, show him he makes for a lousy boyfriend anyway, and make sure there aren’t any what-ifs waiting for him in New York.
No stone left unturned, after all.
Or: Summer brings clouds, nostalgia, and the all-consuming fear of change. They deal with it.
