In the summers she waited for Celine to come home from her exhaustive hours at the clinic, sitting at the table twiddling her thumbs, or perched on the stairs out front, cicadas blaring in her ears. This was the routine from childhood until one summer disrupted the cycle – the summer after which Celine and Rumi moved to the city. Six years ago.
