Jay had confessed something earlier, while they were both gaming on the couch. Matt was winning 10-1, Jay’s heart was not in it, too busy palpitating in anticipation. They’d been sleeping together for a few months now and have only just started getting a little bit weirder with it. Jay found out Matt liked getting his hair pulled, Matt found out that Jay liked being pinned down, manhandled. Jay fumbled around for a response. “I, uh— I’m— I can do stuff,” he said. “With— without you.” The defense was weak. His heart wasn’t in it. Jay also knew, deep down inside himself, that what Matt said was true.
“No, you can’t,” Matt corrected condescendingly. “Every time you try, you fail. It’s embarrassing, really. You’re useless without me.”
