Summary
The door swings open, heavy footsteps meeting the floor underneath. He doesn't look up to see who it is, he doesn't have to. A weight drops beside him, a silent but comforting presence all the same. Neither say anything, not immediately. They simply find something to stare at, their breaths the only sounds they make. There was a time where he hated how well it seemed the Grand Master could read him, believing it to be an opening for control to be taken from him. But now? He finds himself grateful for it, even extends some trust with it.
"Well," he finally breaks the silence, figuring he might as well do it first. Get in his final word before the hammer swings down. "Guess that's that then, huh?" His hand falls to his lap, limp. Varka makes no move to answer. "The great heroes defeated the big bad villain and uncovered the remains of his influence while the sinner cleaned up his mistakes." A dry laugh fills the air, his heart isn't really in it. "At least I had one last hurrah. Certainly wasn't the way I imagined it, but eh, beggars can't be choosers."
a quiet discussion after the storm has passed.

Summary
"He smiles to himself and begins to walk, unhurried, in Lohen’s direction. He doesn’t try to be quiet. He wants Lohen to hear him coming – to feel fear rushing up his throat, to bolt from his hiding spot like a scared rabbit, to run. And he knows Lohen wants him to give chase. To hunt him down until he’s breathless and trembling, to catch him and pin him and make him his."
Lohen needs to let loose. Varka, as always, indulges him.

Summary
“Tell me, Cloud. Do you sleep more soundly with someone beside you?” Sephiroth asked, keeping his tone conversational. “I’m familiar with the barracks back in Midgar, and they don’t allow for much privacy. Some Troopers end up in our clinics for a sort of…separation anxiety. The tyrannical behavior on display from our most lauded captains only reinforces that bond. Shared trauma, they say.”
Cloud froze, suddenly unsure about the trajectory of their conversation.
“I’m an only child, if that’s what you’re asking.”
Sephiroth’s lips twitched into a small smile, his silvery eyelashes fluttering alongside it. Cloud was suddenly much more attuned to the minutiae of his movements, maybe even hypervigilant. “As am I,” Sephiroth said evenly. “That wasn’t what I was asking.”
The night after Cloud’s convoy arrives in Nibelheim, he finds himself plagued by nightmares. His superior officer extends a (seemingly) generous hand.

In Lyney’s completely rational and wholly unbiased opinion, his first defeat at the hands of Wriothesley doesn’t come until three days after the near disaster at the Fortress.
Because losses, as everyone well knows, only count when the fight is fair.
5 times Wriothesley beats Lyney in a fight + 1 time Lyney finally wins.

Summary
“My life is yours!” the soldier howled. It sounded like a battle cry; like a wounded wolf yearning for the moon. Under Xie Lian’s fingertips, that very life sang, a drum of war.
“My life is yours,” Hong’er repeated quietly, grip finally, finally faltering. “So, please…”
Only then did Xie Lian understand.
This wasn’t disobedience. This wasn’t a one-person riot at the worst possible moment. This wasn’t defiance.
This was a prayer.
And Xie Lian was a god.
(Spoilers for Book 3)
