Ivan smirks, wincing as the tip of the metal nicks his skin. “Do me a favour, love, and take off the mask? If you’re actually going to kill me this time, I’d like to see your face.”
Sure enough, the man reaches the hand that isn’t threatening to slit Ivan’s neck to the back of his head, unclasping the mask and letting it fall to the ground.
Lovro Dević looks up, blue eyes gleaming, lips contorted into a permanent frown. Well, that’s the impression he wants to give. Ivan has seen him laugh, seen him smile - once, a very long time ago. Granted, it's only been a few years, almost nothing relative to how long Ivan has been around, but it feels like millenia since Lovro looked at him and didn’t want to kill him.

Suddenly, Ema pulls away, breathing shakily. Her lips are kiss-bitten, almost swollen, and Sonja feels her pulse spike with pride. I did that, she thinks. That was me! Sonja chases Ema’s lips, craning her neck, but Ema moves just out of reach, expression suddenly serious.
“We don’t have to do anything,” she starts, “we can just-”
Sonja fights not to roll her eyes, because doing so would reduce the amount of time spent cataloguing every one of Ema’s features. “I didn’t come all this way just to kiss you, Ema.”

“Yeah, well, you look like shit,” Ivan shoots back before collapsing back into the chair. “I’m serious, what the hell were you doing? And don’t lie to me, I already spoke to the doctors.”
“Why do you care?” Lovro says. “And what are you even doing here?” Now that the initial shock horror has worn off, all Lovro can feel - aside from intense, uncomfortable pain all over his body - is pure confusion.
Ivan looks at him, then, gaze heavy and significant. “Turns out I’m still your emergency contact.”

Home is a generous word for the space they share. Home implies - Kit thinks of warm sunshine through a kitchen window. Bread baking on the windowsill. Home is for the living. This isn't like that. Lair is such a strong word, laden with melodrama and seediness in a way that doesn't feel quite right. It's the place where Kit sleeps. Where Jade lives. Where Kit curls into Jade cool in her coffin at the break of each dawn, and where Kit wakes every evening. Their eternal resting place.
Kit slips in the front door in the hours before dawn, smelling like cheap liquor and blood and sex. Jade is waiting for her. She's reading in the nook on the landing; ankles crossed as she sits in the tasteful vintage armchair arranged there for just this purpose. In her hands is a small leather-bound volume that looks old, but well-loved, well-cared for. Just like everything else in this space.
"Did you eat?" Jade asks. Her voice is calm and even. She is the still eye to Kit's hurricane, ever-steady.
