A yellow Post-It was stuck to the top, bearing the words “help yourself” in sloppy handwriting that Carol immediately recognized. She knew what she would find inside, but she opened the box anyway. Sure enough—it was a collection of business casual attire, clearly pre-owned but seemingly devoid of holes and stains.

She leans into him and he squeezes her shoulder companionably; and she turns her head to kiss his cheek and the corner of his mouth, companionably, as one would kiss a friend. His sharp intake of breath is anything but companionable, and her heart leaps into her throat.
