Tears sting your eyes, and you pull your arm away from him, stepping back. "So I have to listen to the Colonel even when it comes to eating and drinking now?" you snap, hating how hurt and raw you sound. You hate the way you feel so vulnerable around him. He's always made you feel weak.

“You have company,” Sylus says, his brows furrowing. His eyes rove Valko up and down, sizing him up for a fight already. About the same height, but chest more defined—made for strength rather than Sylus’ swift build.
If Valko is a bloody fist, Sylus is a knife in the dark. But judging by the impression in his pocket, as your gaze drifts down, he’s brought one with him as well.

After a while Caleb declares it’s bedtime.
Gideon’s stomach swoops as he stands. You hop up from your seat, up on your tiptoes to kiss Gideon on the cheek. “Night-night, Gid,” you tell him, and he dazedly says “yeah” like an idiot until he remembers to add a quick “you too”.
You disappear down the hallway to the bathroom, and Caleb follows. He pauses just before he rounds the corner, turning his head slightly.
“Door’s open.”
Caleb invites Gideon to spend his birthday with the three of you.

“Why don’t you run me through tonight’s plans?” Sylus says as he helps you into the car. “Since you’re my assistant now.”
“Arrival in fifteen, shake hands, and get an invite to cocktail party at eight,” you go down the list on your fingers after you buckle yourself in. “Mingle until we’re either invited to a backroom or someone can give us a name. And then we kick their asses.”
Sylus chuckles. He keeps his eyes on the road as he drives, shifting gear with one hand, the other lazily on the steering wheel. It’s effortlessly hot, and it annoys you a great deal. “There might be a few steps in between intelligence gathering and ass-kicking, but you got the gist of it. You are?”
“Your overworked assistant,” you say.
“Overworked?” Sylus asks, amused. “I don’t remember this being part of the script.”
“I’m simply trying to portray my role as realistically as possible.”
You moonlight as Sylus’ assistant. Things go a little differently than planned.

Sylus sat there for a moment, unsure of how to proceed. He wasn’t exactly an expert in comforting people, but it was also killing him as he tried to rack his brain around what he said to hurt you.
One glance at your lips, formed in a trembling pout, screamed the word loud and clear. He had called you clingy. He had done it in a joking manner of course, but he could see now that you clearly did not take it as such. You took it straight to the heart.
OR… Sylus calls you clingy as a joke and you take it the wrong way. So he makes it up to you!
