Summary
With PTMC short-staffed, Jack has worked himself to the bone. Samira tests a theory that she can get Jack to take care of himself if he thinks he's taking care of her.
--
They eat with the faint murmur of the ED as a soundtrack. She pulls apart small pieces of her egg and cheese english muffin. Abbot wolfs down the burrito and studies the remains of the wrapper, as though his own hunger has surprised him.
Her lips twitch with sympathetic amusement. How oblivious he’s been to his own needs. There’s a strange delight too, in finding Ellis was right. He’ll listen to her. He’ll give in, if it’s her. The thrill down her spine is electric. She wants to know how far she can push this. Exactly how close she can get before he says no or sees through her. How good would he be to himself if she asked it of him? Will he let her love him in this transitive way? Care for yourself because you care about me and I care about you.
Well. Samira Mohan is nothing if not data-driven.

Summary
“And listen,” he continues, and she can watch the part of his brain prone to nervous rambling switch on. “I know the popular opinion is against my general sanity but—I swear to god, I wanna marry you Samira Mohan. And you can say no, and I’m still gonna spend the rest of my life in love with you.”
“Until your other leg falls off,” she repeats, a little distantly.
Jack nods solemnly. “The chance is slim but never zero.”

Samira Mohan does not cope gracefully with having to wait months for her board exam results. Jack Abbot decides to distract her.

"I enjoy you," she continued.
"Mmm," he hummed satisfied.
"Professionally," Samira added."But I also like when you sit with me," she took a deep breath.
"Unprofessionally?" he inquired charmingly.——— or
Samira and Jack enjoyed each other’s company. On a darkened park bench. In the sterile impersonal breakroom of PTMC. In the stale heat of Jack’s garage. Both knowing. Both artfully dancing around the feelings that charge the air around them, breaching the surface only to retreat again. Both patiently waiting for this thing to come to a head once and for all.

“Look, I’m not trying to overwork you, or treat you like an attending ‘cause you’re not. But I want at least one doctor working with me who I don’t have to fuckin’ worry about.”
Samira’s only reply comes out as a disbelieving huff.
“So what do you say? You gonna be my rock on the night shift?”
-OR-
After the Fourth of July, Samira moves to the night shift. At some point, she starts fucking Abbot. They don’t talk about it. It works, honestly. Well, until it doesn’t.

Summary
Samira leaned forward conspiratorially, “Is he always this much of a flirt?”
Lena grinned at her, “Only to keep his patient satisfaction scores up.”
Samira swivelled to face him, a pleased smile on her face, “I knew you were only being nice to me for a good review.”
Jack shoved his hands into the front pockets of his scrubs, mainly to make sure they didn’t do something stupid like tuck the errant curl on her cheekbone behind her ear, “What can I say Ms Mohan, you had me on my best behaviour.”

Summary
“Is he your boyfriend?” The child of the pit bull’s family asks.
She’s sitting off to the side in a light blue folding chair, and Samira guesses she can’t be older than fourteen. Her big blue eyes watch Jack as her left foot bounces impatiently for her father to return from the car with the dog's extra leash.
The mother looks embarrassed and opens her mouth to apologize, but Samira is quick to reassure her.
“He wants to be.” Samira smirks and licks another chunk of cookie dough in her mouth. “I’m taking my time to decide.”
“You can do that?” The teenager looks uncertain. “The boys at my school are so impatient.”Bookmarked by jojorbbit

Summary
Jack must’ve jinxed it. He wanted something else to steal his attention from the handover, and that wish seems to have been granted in the form of a yelp of pain.
Jack's head snaps up in search of the source of the sound. It’s loud enough to have grabbed the attention of everyone in the vicinity. No traumas have come in since he arrived, so whoever made that sound is likely to be in urgent need of his assistance.
And that’s when he sees it. Samira. She’s stumbling out of a patient's room, clutching at her right side, collapsing into Langdon, who catches her before she can fall to the floor.
Or, with a rift caused by Samira's impending departure, Jack witnessing an injury at shift change might be the catalyst needed for them to bridge the gap.

Summary
Samira is 23 years old, a scholarship student at PTMC. She has her whole life planned out, and so far she’s been checking off every goal.
Until she meets Jack Abbot. Not in a normal way. With lies. With both of them pretending to be someone they’re not.
Jack Abbot, 43, night shift supervisor, wears a fake wedding ring. He has never been married and never been widowed—but the ring works like a magnet. It keeps expectations low. It keeps things simple.
But one night is enough for something to go wrong. One of those situations with an 85% to 98% effectiveness rate.
And somehow… they end up being the exception.

“Oh,” she says, flustered again — god this girl is easy to work up — “you really don’t have to, Mr. — Dr. — Jack.”
He cocks an eyebrow at her. “You’re a guest in my house Samira. I expect you to act like one, and that means eating breakfast when I offer.”

“You’re the smartest person I know in every room—but if you think I’ll have to pretend to have feelings for you, pretend like I’m fucking thrilled you chose me, then I will get on my knees right now and remind you that pretending is not necessary.”
Her stomach bottoms out, lips parting as his words sink in. Heat spreads through her body as her eyes flicker between his eyes and lips, voice light in a daze when she murmurs, “That’s not a bad idea.”
The corner of Jack’s mouth curves up. “Your mom’s right outside.”

“You’re fuckin’ thirty, you have just turned thirty, twelve hours ago,” he says incredulously. “You’ve still got your whole life ahead of you.”
“But I haven’t done anything!” she exclaims dramatically, gesturing with her glass hard enough that water splashes onto the table.
“You’re months away from finishing your residency,” Jack points out dryly as he reaches over to rescue the glass from her hand entirely. “And you had a paper published in The Lancet. I’d say those count as pretty significant achievements.”
Samira rolls her eyes at him again, like he’s deliberately missing the point.
“But I haven’t done anything else!”
Or—Samira kicks off her thirtieth birthday party with an existential crisis.
