    Here's what Frank knew:

He overdosed last night. Somehow, by some miracle provided by God, or the Universe, or even Fate itself, he didn't die.

Instead, he passed out in bed and woke up in 2018, his first year as a med student. To make matters worse, he didn't remember much, all his memories of that year and going forward not gone, but frozen in a befuddled haze where he couldn't make them out.

Lastly, he couldn't help the nagging feeling that there was someone, somewhere, he had to get to. The feeling came from a place deeper than his body, beyond his flesh and blood. It was a gentle tug, not hurried, apprehensive or forceful; solely a mean to guide him to where he belonged.

Perhaps he had the chance to change his whole life — make it better. Could he?

    or,

The one where Frank almost kills himself and the universe takes pity on him, bringing his past rather than his death. Now it's up to him what to do with this second chance.

My contribution for the Time and Space day of Kingdon Week, though slightly late.

    Summary

“You should get back home to your wife,” she says carefully, slowly, like it’s a reprimand she doesn’t trust him to register as one unless she draws attention to it.

He pretends he didn’t hear her.

It’s only later, at the bus stop, that a firm sense of certainty washes over Frank for the first time in a very long time. He’d gotten it all wrong. Mel clearly has someone else to preoccupy herself with. It was embarrassing, really, to assume she would want a fuck up like him. At that moment, like the punctuation to some cosmic joke, the wedding ring he’s been fingering absentmindedly slips off his finger and skitters around in a circle between his feet. He crouches down to pick it back up as the last bus home flies past. He half wishes it had hit him; it probably would have hurt less than the realisation that he has feelings for Mel King, and she doesn’t feel the same way.

    OR

Frank wants Mel so badly he's willing to fuck up his whole life to have whatever crumbs of her he can scrape together. The question is: how many people is he going to hurt on his way to her, and will he stop before she becomes one of them?

    Summary

Mel, overwhelmed by burnout, spends her day off reading at her favorite café to escape the constant cycle of work and exhaustion. A stranger named James approaches her, and despite her social hesitation, they connect over history. He’s warm, confident, and unexpectedly charming, leaving her his number before heading to work. Mel is left unsure but intrigued.

Meanwhile, Langdon is deep in a chaotic ER shift, battling stress, chronic pain, and cravings. In the break room, he meets the new attending, Dr. Jasper (“Jas”), who is upbeat, experienced, and quickly comfortable in the environment. They talk about background, burnout, and the intensity of emergency medicine. Jas casually mentions meeting someone at a café earlier, but the conversation is cut short when a trauma arrives, pulling them both back into the pace of the ER.

    Summary

At 12:17 in the morning, Frank pulled into his driveway. As expected, the family room light was still on. And for the first time since his friendship with Mel began, Frank Langdon lied to his wife about his whereabouts.

    OR

Frank Langdon commits the ignoble crime of emotional infidelity, reflects on his relationships, and gets stuck on an elevator.

And yes, all of these scenarios involve Mel King.

    Summary

"Is this what you want?" Mel asked, eyes searching his face so urgently he could barely track them.

Frank sighed, stretching out his neck and closing his eyes. "It's what she wants—"

"You, Frank," Mel interrupted. "I don't care about Abby. What do you want?"

He wet his lips, rubbing them together as he watched her sit with a hand on the door, ready to leave the car at any given moment. Then, he nodded. "Yeah," he said simply. "I want this."

She shook her head, gathering her bag from by her feet and pushing the door open. "Then have it," she said, forcing herself out. "Just don't expect me to watch."
