Summary
Lucy takes the tutoring assignment because she doesn’t want to be in her house for even a second longer than she has to. She wants to get the fuck away from her parents and the yelling and the shame and the little box of razors she keeps in the far corner of her top drawer.
She has no idea, when she accepts the extra credit, that it’s going to change her entire fucking life.
“He can be… grumpy,” her English Lit teacher says, and Lucy winces where she’s standing in the doorway, her books clasped to her chest and her heavy backpack weighing her down.
“So he’s an asshole?”
Luna smiles at her and chuckles softly as she shakes her head.
“No, he’s a good boy deep down. He’s … like a burnt marshmallow, really. All crispy and rough on the outside, but inside he’s just gooey and sweet.”

Summary
As she gets closer, Tim is immediately drawn to her wide brown eyes; they are broadcasting her emotional state for everyone to see — some combination of eager and excited and nervous. The polar opposite of the cool and guarded expression he is careful to keep on his own face.
Angela turns to look at him, clearly trying to gauge his reaction before she whacks him with her bouquet and hisses, “That is your soon-to-be wife, Tim, not your new boot, so maybe chill out with the death glare. You shouldn’t be trying to intimidate her.”
Tim ignores her; he begs to differ. This woman is supposed to be his wife. Chosen by supposed experts to be his life partner, his perfect other half. He is sure as hell going to be assessing whether she measures up to his standards. The fact that he already knows all of this is bullshit honestly just makes him that much more inclined to prove it.
When she reaches the end of the aisle, she stops in front of him and tilts her head to smile up at him in this sweet, hopeful way that he simultaneously finds incredibly endearing and incredibly irritating — like he holds her fate in his hands, and she is counting on him not to f*ck it up.

“He works at Mid-Wilshire with my dad,” he whispers. “He’s a TO… or at least he was. I guess something happened and he was sent here to teach instead of training, though my father won’t tell me what. But it’s definitely a demotion, so I wouldn’t mess with him. He’s probably pissed about it and out to ruin our lives.”
Lucy chews thoughtfully on the end of her pen as she half listens, half wonders.
What could Officer Bradford have done to deserve a demotion?
And does she want to get on his bad side?
She kind of liked the spark she’d seen in him this morning, and the way he’d approached her and yelled at her had caused something warm and funny to happen in her belly.
She kind of wants to poke at him again, just to see what happens.

“Feed from me,” she said. Asked. Offered.
His face closed off entirely. He looked even more mad than at her little unclothed stunt. “No.”
Tim pulled the door open with abnormal strength, but Lucy moved accordingly, blocking the path with her body.
“Why not?” she pressed. “I’m your consort, that is literally why—”
“That is a cover-up. An excuse for you not to marry a parlour-bred political wannabe.”
“Tim.” She forced her hips back, closing the door again with a soft thud.

In order to run from a forced marriage orchestrated by her mother, Lucy runs to the only person who could help her. Her long-time protector, Tim Bradford. Except the only way he can do so is by snapping her away to England and making her his blood bag. A couple of bad decisions later, Lucy Chen is taking residence at the Mulgrave Estate, along with Tim's vampire clan.
For Lucy, there is a problem, though. A scrawny, tall, awfully blonde problem who turns Tim's attention into a competition.
For Tim, the problem is another altogether: Lucy had never said anything about the second main reason for her request being to seduce him.
