If you ask Shane Hollander, he'll tell you the bar's highball glasses are committing a war crime against sparkling water, your outfit has at least three structural flaws, and no, he is NOT blushing, it's just warm in here, and no, he was NOT staring at the new bartender through the gap in the ficus leaves, he was RESTING HIS EYES, and also, for the record, he doesn't care that the bartender has hazel eyes the color of warm stone in late-afternoon light or that his hands can untangle Shane's knotted fingers like they were made for exactly that purpose. He's a particularly opinionated artist with a sunset to paint. He doesn't have time for this. (He makes so much time for this.)
A neurodivergent artist with the social grace of a startled deer + a bartender with the patience of a saint + a best friend who lives for drama = a love story told in fumbled words, shared sunsets, and the quiet understanding that sometimes the most profound conversations happen without speaking a word.

Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?

Ilya's face split into a wide grin. It made his eyes sparkle. Shane wanted to kiss him very badly. "Oh. Oh. You are very drunk."
"I wouldn't say very drunk. I'm normal drunk." Shane corrected, stepping closer to Ilya until they were barely centimeters apart. Shane reached up and wrapped his arms around Ilya's neck. They were so close and he smelled so good. Shane breathed him in for a second. Fuck, he had missed him so badly. It had only been two weeks, but it felt like forever.
"I missed you too." Ilya whispered. Wait, had Shane said that out loud? Oops. Maybe he was very drunk. "More than you know."
Or, the transition from friends with benefits to lovers is far from seamless.

Summary
Shane and Ilya were childhood rivals at the Toronto School of Music. When they joined the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, they started to become friends until one day Ilya disappeared from the world of classical music.
A decade later, Shane is a violinist for the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Ilya is the lead singer and guitarist of "Roz and the Centaurs." When Ilya's band seeks a violinist to join them on tour, Shane reluctantly auditions and gets the position.
When Ilya and Shane are photographed drinking together at a bar, the press incorrectly assumes they are dating. Pretending they are in a relationship could boost Shane's profile and mend Ilya's scandal-ridden image, but is it really a good idea?
