Zuko has traded his golden headpiece for a white crown of sunlight, has shrugged the weight of a nation from his shoulders, if only for today. He’s just Zuko—her idiot of a brother, the one she can’t seem to bring herself to hate, despite her best efforts. Beside him stands another person she’d rather despise, in her familiar ocean blues that calm whatever anxiety Azula harbored.
The very same people who watched her wailing, in chains and defeated, while the sky wept fire.

Mai loved Zuko, he was her could’ve, her almost, and maybe her should’ve. Not her person, but close enough that she would have been happy enough. Content enough, safe enough.
Nowadays, Mai still liked to watch him. He looked great, playing with the turtleducks, and playing with Izumi, still spending time with Ilah. Somehow it wasn’t awkward, the way he loved the pup like she was his through and through (appearance-wise, the siblings were similar enough to pass down the same traits. Except for the eyes.)

Katara hates Azula Sozin. Well, maybe that's not the right way to put it—but Azula certainly hates her with a burning passion. So when Azula hears a supposed confession of Katara’s ‘crush’ on Zuko, it isn’t exactly ideal.
What’s more is they’ve been assigned a group project to do together, and Katara finds that her days only become more entwined with Azula. Zuko is painfully oblivious, and Katara intends to keep it that way, even if she doesn’t see him much anymore. He seems to spend more and more time with Mai.

Summary
All Azula wants is silence. To be freed from the echoes of her mother's ghost, the judgement in her brother's eyes, and the memories of the childhood she spent clawing at perfection. Upon Zuko's royal decree, she's released from the institution she'd been placed in at the end of the war, but it isn't the peace she'd been hoping for. Instead, she finds herself being dragged to Ember Island, where Zuko and his friends are determined to help her heal.
Despite the group's efforts, Azula is dejected and uninterested in their help. Her resentment only grows as she endures their attempts to fix what she doesn't even believe to be broken.
To her growing frustration, she finds an unexpected solace in the last person she expects: Katara. And no matter how much she tries, Azula can't seem to push her away.
