Grace misses touch.
He would be perfectly fine never having it again except for the fact that the last human hands he felt were holding his face in the dirt while he screamed.
Meanwhile, Rocky is growing agitated-- it is almost his molting cycle, and he has concerns about building a new shell.-------------
Grace thinks it's just coincidence or proximity when Rocky asks him to decorate pieces of the new carapace, or when the pieces he holds don't crumble in his atmosphere. Or when the hand that presses against the xenonite paneling during testing looks incredibly, insanely human.
It's just him projecting. Rocky wouldn't want that.

Summary
The Hail Mary was a familiar situation. A small vessel, limited resources, skeleton crew. Grace had excess because it was supposed to be a three person team, but that didn't automatically mean it was available for Simon to use. Taking what they were saying at face value, that he didn't have to fulfill a particular role in order to benefit from the onboard resources, it was difficult. It was like trying to imagine the smell of fresh air. He knew it existed, but he had no way to know what it was like.
Existing and taking up space on a cramped ship wasn't anything new to Simon. He had lived on his fair share of space fairing vessels and stationary structures, by himself or with others for different lengths of time. Each time, he had a job. Each time, he was expected to contribute to the crew or be considered a waste of resources. There wasn't enough of anything left to give to someone that wasn't useful. A small, angry voice inside his head screamed at him to be useful.

Summary
Grace has come to terms with the fact that he will never see another human or Earth again. And that's okay, because he's happy on Erid with Rocky and Adrian. However, with the Hail Mary in mint condition, the Eridians propose that he travels to a red moon in a planetary system with a dead sun, along with Adrian and Rocky, to determine just why it's so...weird. The answer's no. Obviously.
Until they hear a human distress signal coming from that exact moon, and suddenly everything changes.

A new human, inexplicably, shows up on Erid, and Ryland Grace has to remember how to be a good host. Considering he hasn’t seen another human in about a decade, and this human is both distractingly handsome and incredibly traumatized, it’s safe to say that this might be a challenge… especially with Ryland still working through his own issues, even all these years later.
But he saved the entire world, so, how hard could it be to save one more man?

Ryland Grace hates that sentence.
Heroes volunteer. Heroes aren't shoved onto spaceships and sent light-years from home.
After learning that taumoeba can consume xenonite, Ryland gives up his chance of ever seeing Earth again and turns the Hail Mary around to save Rocky.
Rocky is thrilled.
Ryland is not prepared for Rocky's constant hovering, concern over his eating habits, refusal to respect personal space, or the sudden revelation that Rocky and his mate Adrian have apparently been looking for a third.
Three years to Erid is a long time to spend trapped on a spaceship.
Especially when Rocky has decided that Ryland belongs with them.

Summary
The idea of holding any living, breathing thing in his arms after all this time was. . . certainly something. It was forcing feelings to bubble up that Grace thought he had made peace with, even if his track record of making peace wasn’t exactly stellar. And of course, there was the ever-looming fear that he had completely imagined the whole thing, that the image of a mutilated, blood-soaked human appearing on the ship for him to take care of was just some twisted fantasy that his brain had invented, and that he was doomed to slowly lose his mind and wither away before even getting to stand on solid ground again—but even still, the feeling of a warm, breathing thing in his arms had been so real, so different from any other possible sensory experience on the ship, so strangely comforting despite the grotesqueness, that the idea of it being a complete figment of his imagination was, frankly, scary.
Or:
Is Grace touch-starved enough to blindly trust this guy who just spawned onto the Hail Mary covered in blood? Yeah, probably.
