Summary
It wasn’t as though he one day chose to cease speaking. It just happened.
No one wanted to engage him in conversation anymore. None of the fellow knights seemed to know what to do with him. All were a varied mix of jealous, pitying, and awed. Link could not decide which he hated most, and so he withdrew into himself more, replacing the hours that had once been filled with camaraderie and friendship with training.
Sunup to sundown, he practiced. Sometimes under the watchful eye of his Captain, sometimes on his own, a lone figure on the training field. Others gave him a wide berth, eyeing his intense stance and expression with wariness.
It was not enough, Link discovered. People looked to him with a desperate desire. They wanted his reassurance. They wanted his heroism, like the heroes of years past. They wanted him to save them.

Over the years, Link's relationship with verbally speaking has changed as his circumstances have. Each chapter will cover a different time period of his life, from Pre-Calamity to Post-Totk. Each chapter can be read on its own, like a one-shot, if you're avoiding spoilers.

There was no sign of fire anywhere, but he was sure he could feel the sting of smoke in his eyes and throat. The moss and lichen growing on their mechanical shells was proof they died long ago. Yet the screams echoed louder in his head with each one he saw.He scrambled up the hill back the way he came, tripping on the half-buried steps, glancing behind to make sure the dark shapes hadn't moved.
Why? Why am I running?! It doesn’t make sense!
He slowed to a stop in the rocky hollow where he'd found the apples and dropped to his knees. Breathing felt like a chore. It was like a cloth wrapped around his chest, pulling tighter and tighter. He gasped and wheezed but couldn't get enough air to keep up with his racing heart. Everything spun. The ground came up to meet him as he collapsed with a dull thud.
His name was Link, and his mind was broken.
After waking from a deep sleep with terrible scars but no memories to accompany them, Link sets out on a perilous journey to uncover his broken past and save the fallen kingdom of Hyrule, making friends along the way.

Having just moved to the big city, Link is struggling in more ways than one: Relentless bullying, no friends besides his sassy little sister, and to top it all off, he's failing! But when tutoring pits him against the most popular girl in school, he realizes he might not be the only one in need of rescuing.
