    Summary

incessantly, on and on, without pause. waking, disintegrating, over and over, endlessly. he was weary, now. the cycle of karma had branded itself into his skin, blazing cold, frigid fire. he was like a spider caught in its own web, like a snake biting its own tail, helpless to be devoured by himself.

everything left of him, eroded away, the ocean of time carving its way through his cliffside.

he, only once, lived guided by his own pleasure and displeasure. after that, the wheel of fate, the rope of destiny, tightened around his neck, far more a cage or prison than the boy with blossom hair ever had been.

vexation, humiliation, exhaustion, and finally nothing at all– a blank slate, cleansed of evil.

…the buddha and king enma both must be laughing at him.

    Summary

something felt so, so incredibly wrong, about the fact that there was currently... something, a fragment, a piece, a soul, terrifying as the implication was, something, tied to his mind, more worrying that it apparently belonged to the man who took everything from him, burned his once-home to the ground and had caused him so much pain.

what's more worrying still was that this version, splinter, whatever it was, was so distantly detached from the cruel and downright mad nature of the one who was supposed to be real.

that the one in his dreams was all gentle voice, weirdly analytical composure, thoughtful and contemplative and unbelievably unlike the general he had worshipped from afar, unlike the fallen angel who haunted his every step.

the one in his dreams was all too... soft.

and, unfortunately for him, it was even more unsettling with how aware the other was of his own softness, and was just as confused as him.

    Summary

his heart continued to beat. his heart would not grieve for him. nothing on this earth would mourn his passing. not even himself.

nothing mattered. in the end, annihilation was all that awaited. the air he breathed was poison; he was forever condemned as the opposite of all living things, no matter how deeply he desired to live. there was nothing left for him.

humanity had created an evil to overcome, and he would go down gladly. may the divinities that sentenced him to death be satisfied; he wanted the same as them. to fall into slumber for the final time. everything went up in smoke.

    everything.

    Summary

blazing red eyes, light lost in the flames. one after another, fragile glass shards dissipated at his feet. there were many whispers, filling his head, the scarlet teardrop dangling around his neck from that silver chain burning brightly. the words inside his mind contradicted, confusing, nonsensical. it ached.

he pressed a hand to his forehead, trembling. was this truly what he was meant to inherit? did fate desire it so? time, falling through his fingers like the endless desert of sand he had been born in. was he deserving of this, because of all his failures? had any of his failures or successes ever mattered, before all this?

the fire roared on. the body in his hands was cold and feverish all at once, and at the center of it all, the jewel remained, flickering far more brilliantly than crimson-stained eyes. everything went up in smoke.

    everything.

    Summary

a fugitive rests his head in a land that is not his own; and yet, he has never had a land of his own at all, he thinks. wondering, wishing, for something that might have been in another life, that might have been in another world, and yet despite all the strings fate pulls, it took that spark away from him.

perhaps he would write a few poems, and let his mind drift away in the unfamiliar warmth of this place.

if only he could have shared this unfamiliar warmth.

    Summary

    breathe out, breathe in.

he called his home where his siblings resided, staying among the frost and snow. he called his home where he felt the thrill of battle, dancing among the ruin of death, close enough to feel it, far enough to give it.

he called his home snezhnaya, where the ice spread into all facets of life, and to know that all he was, all he would ever get to be, was in service of advancing the cold's creep over the lands he would never have to know, for they were not his home.

his home was not liyue, where the sunrise was warm, while ore glittered through mountains, with the autumn breeze flowing calm and the city alive with devotion not based on manipulation and silence. it was not where gentleness held him carefully, treating him as if though he was something more than a blade to be wielded.

    Summary

those hands were so, so warm.

he could feel the pulse of unimaginable energy coursing beneath them, but on him, they were firm, strong, unshakeable. they were shelter from the rain, like a cavern of stone with a campfire all for him. arms, around him, grounding him in reality and yet it felt so dreamlike, keeping him safe, safe, safe, safe, safe.

the soft, unending glow of beautiful eyes, akin to that of a setting sun over a sea, looking at him, him alone, only him, revering him as if though he was the one supposed to be a god here.

    so why?

why did he have to make those hands go cold?

    Summary

there's an unspoken word in the air. he cannot dare to say it, though he was fully able to. of course he was-- a god of death, of blood, of war, of madness, of fields and swine and fickle things, that is what he was. a god who was a weapon, a terrifying force that tore through mortals without blinking. a god who was never a god of peace, of saving the ones he drove to anarchy.

it was not in his nature; it was not in the way his hands took to wielding blades like a fish to water or a farmer to a field, it was not in the way he had painted battlefields a vermilion that dazzled gold in the sun, it was not in the way his voice echoed sanity-forsaken laughter through valleys over the bodies of fragile beings that passed so, so quickly--

there's a man before him now, eyes flickering with undying flame, of a desire that wanted what he did-- wanted vengeance, wanted chaos.

his thoughts catch up to him, now, and he wonders, silently, something he'd never thought of before, because when you are a god, you care little for consequences:
"is it my fault that you have become this?"

    Summary

the emotions brought about by something from far before his time, of a being that he cannot control in dreams and of one who knows far more than he. he wonders how far that darkness goes, wonders how that golden shine of riches and splendor vanished beneath a cold cavern and centuries of giving out judgment to the few dead that wandered to that being. what changed the wise king of uruk he knew so well in that singularity, and more so; what happened to this one, so detached from the world?

merlin finds himself in a delicate situation, in between the veil of life and death, and a frozen laboratory far away from what remains of humanity. at the least, he is not alone, for once; but he wonders, even more, why he feels so much around this one when he is not supposed to.
