"Atsushi was brought back to cold, empty nights in which the only warm thing he felt was his own blood spilling onto the ground and the taste of flesh in between his teeth. It should’ve scared him more when after a while blood had started to smell sickeningly sweet. He always wanted more so Byakko took more, she wanted to give him a full stomach, and so she did."
Atsushi struggles to draw the line between food, himself and blood. The best food he'd ever eaten at the Orphanage were ones warm and alive, the memory hazy and blurred. Naturally Dazai notices, and of course Ranpo does to.

Kyōka has a nightmare, and goes to Atsushi for comfort. Atsushi finds comfort in being needed. The siblings comfort each other just by being near and present.

"Every morning after Mari’s death, Kel would bring both his and Hero’s breakfast upstairs to their shared room so Hero wouldn’t have to eat alone, well… maybe because Kel didn’t want to eat without his brother but nobody needed to know that. Kel would watch Hero absent mindedly pick at his freshly made breakfast, courtesy of their mother. As Kel watched the husk of his brother stare off into the distance he let the quiet munching of his food fill the deafening silence of the room. Kel tried to pretend as if it didn’t matter if they no longer spoke as often if at all, he just wanted some semblance of normalcy. "
