Ilya’s so high on painkillers it’s a wonder he can focus on anything at all, but his bruised eyes are alert and fixed on Shane. He’s still mumbling in Russian, voice slurred and so quiet that Shane can only catch snippets.
“Dreamed of you,” Ilya murmurs, and all the breath in Shane’s lungs stutters out of him. “So beautiful, you’re... such a perfect mouth, and those freckles… fuck, I want…”
“What’s he saying?” Mom asks.
“Nothing,” Shane lies, too fast to be very convincing.

Ten minutes passed, and Ilya, who normally could drift off easily, only felt more and more wired. He definitely didn't want sex while the other person was feeling bad. The thought made him nauseous. But he found himself still yearning for the release that came with being with Hollander. If not the physical release, the emotional and mental one. Behind his eyelids, all he could see were those damn freckles.
Ilya gnawed on his lip and decided to toe a line they haven't crossed yet. Ironically, this was one that usually came way before every other line they've already crossed. He picked back up his phone.
Lily: You are sleeping for a few hours in the hotel.
Jane: Yeah? And?
Lily: Does it matter if you are sleeping in your room, or in mine?

“I think we need some rules for this year,” Shane admits. He knows it’s not fun or cool. It’s also the only way he’s going to be able to drive away from this ugly ass apartment and not have a panic attack.
“Like your rules for loading the dishwasher?” Ilya teases, his thumb rubbing a gentle circle on the apple of Shane’s cheek. “No, No you would want something more serious.”
Once Ilya told him he preferred to have hard conversations in person so that he could reach out and touch Shane. He said it was grounding and made him feel safe. Shane gets it. All of this is less scary when their knees are bumped together and Ilya’s hands are gently holding his head.
“More like some guardrails to make sure your first year in Ottawa is a success.” It’s a cop out. He wants rules to be sure that come next summer they are just like this with a few more memories thrown in for good measure.
Or: After a year of living in different countries Ilya has successfully been signed with the Ottawa Centaurs. Now both he and Shane have to learn to navigate what it's means when long distance doesn't involve plane rides and stolen nights while Ilya establishes roots in Shane's boring hometown.
