Summary
Haymitch felt confident that this was another punishment dictated by Snow. How many names in that bowl were Burdock’s? Was it all of them? He felt an overwhelming urge to find out. It would be easy. All he had to do was knock the bowl on the ground and watch it break into a million pieces, the Capitol’s regime shattering with it as everyone realized that there were no odds to be in favor of. The outcome of the Games was manipulated from the start.

the world sharpens painfully into clarity when he sees the hollowness of her cheeks, the taught skin over her wrists, and Burdocks hunting jacket pulled tight over her body. Her eyes have that hollow, glassy look starving seam kids get that tells him she's close to death. He knows it's not cold outside, a stark contrast to a couple days ago, the very last of the winter winds blowing softly through the trees. She shouldn't be cold.

Frodo froze. His face paled, lighthearted words disappearing in an instant. Sam spun around, hand reaching for a phantom hilt of a sword left far away in the armoury. For a moment, he didn’t see anything. Maybe Frodo was having one of his episodes again, though he couldn’t begin to fathom what could have caused it. Then he spotted it.
A spider. Not gigantic, but… Big. Its spindly legs stretched out, poised to run but frozen in place. Sam felt his own breath hitch.
“Sam.” Frodo’s voice was almost a whisper.
“Yes, Mister Frodo,” Sam replied softly, his own voice shaking slightly.
“There appears to be a situation.”
“Yes, Mister Frodo.”
“What do we do?”

It’s a boy who decided that he was going to die, and it’s the wet mulch answering him in kind. Haymitch wants to crawl into the rat king that’s hissing at him from the basement and remember that this house has seen the worst of him, and it wants to keep him inside of it forever. Haymitch’s house will die with him.

I have an apostrophe problem. According to the metal gates that guard my house, I live in Victors’ Village. It is supposed to belong to more than one victor. I grab a wrench and climb up the gates. They are decorated with metal vines that act as footholds. I cannot get an angle to knock down the apostrophe exclusively, so I end up bending the S as I lever the punctuation out of place. That does not matter. I wedge the wrought-iron apostrophe where it belongs, right after the R.
I live in Victor’s Village.
Alone.
Note: This fic was written before SOTR, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that carries on two rather specific major thematic elements of SOTR (details in endnote). It does not contain SOTR spoilers.
