It’s obscene in a way that has no human equivalent. I think seeing human genitals on him would’ve shocked me less, because at least that’s something you might reasonably show to another person. But this, the place that is both mouth and everything else to him, that I’ve seen exactly once and then never again because it’s viewed as so private and intimate that even an Eridian’s mate does not get to see—that’s something else. The only time he would reveal himself like this to someone else would be to lay an egg, and even then it would be something you don't draw attention to, something necessary but shameful.

By Eridian standards, Grace is disgusting and terrifying. That’s what Rocky is thinking about at least as Grace trips over a storage container that he left out in his own path.
This creature that should be terrifying and disgusting is really quite clumsy. It’s almost… cute.
Grace nodded, a similar gesture to Eridian jazz hands before walking away and proceeding to trip on the exact same storage cube. Yes, Grace was cute, Rocky decided, clumsy and cute.

Summary
Ryland wilts in the makeshift nest and blows out a long sigh. “Look, it's not that I'm ideologically against it or anything, Rock. It's just that—nothing has ever.” He abruptly pauses, wrinkling his nose to reconfigure his thought pattern while he stares at the ceiling of the ship and makes a vague hand gesture through the air. His blood capillaries are still dilated but not as obscenely as before. “Nobody has ever…y’know? Gosh, why is it so hard to talk about this right now?”
Simultaneous surprise and arousal hit Rocky like twin bolts of frenetic lightning. He would almost break out into joyous song if that didn’t feel slightly inappropriate in light of Grace’s burning bashfulness. “Oh, Rocky understand now,” he gently cuts in. “Grace is a virgin.”

Summary
In a world where humans are born with a predetermined ‘soulmate’, so to say, Ryland Grace is very happy to wonder the earth without. Sure, the weight of what should be his bond dulls the senses and makes the world a little more distant than he would like, but there was nothing for it. Nothing to fix the ache, except a certain splotch of stars, and this feeling of impending doom.
Well, there was nothing, until his life was ruined and subsequently fixed all in one horrible day.
