The sight of blood no longer unsettled him as it once had. Perhaps that was the most terrifying part of all. The battlefield’s resonated with the clash of steel and the guttural screams. It was more familiar than the comfort of a home he could scarcely remember.
Still, fragments of it lingered in the spaces between one ragged breath and the next. The tang of salt on the wind. Sunlit strands of golden hair. A smile, warm and fleeting. The crackle of a hearth, the steady embrace of arms. But memory was a fragile thing, easily shattered. Then another blade would fall, and all that mattered was the next heartbeat. The next breath.
